Batwoman “A Lesson From Professor Pyg” Review

Season 3 Episode 5 – Ryan asks Sophie to accompany her to a dinner at Jada’s to do recon on what her estranged mother knows about Wayne Enterprises; as the terrifying evening unfolds, Ryan witnesses another side to Marquis and her mother.

What I Liked

1. I love how Alice always brings a great scene whenever she is paired up with someone from the team. She and Sophie as roommates is something I won’t get bored of anytime soon.

2. If something could put me off my dinner it would definitely be the guy in the Pig Mask. My original thought was that he was working with Jada but turns out she fired him from a previous job and he’s coming back to get his revenge on Jada and her family. After attacking Zoe with a meat cleaver in the bathroom, we see the family drugged and struggling to move. This scene was very Gory, which I never complain about in these types of shows!

3. Renee gives Alice her back story with Poison Ivy. The two were classmates, up until someone experimented on Pamela. Originally her goal was to save the planet. But eventually, she became too passionate and erratic. In the end, Renee asked Batman to kill Pamela, and she’s been off the radar ever since.

4. Jada, Ryan, Sophie, and Marcus make it to a panic room, after Sophie can’t help but get a few pops in towards Jada we see Marcus have a seizure on the floor from the poison that they’ve all been injected with. As Ryan makes her escape to save the group tensions run high as she’s chased by Lazlo throughout the house.

5. As Lazlo holds a meat cleaver to Ryan’s neck, Jada enters the room and tells him to get away from her daughter, offering her life in place of Ryans. I’m really in shock as to how quickly this scene escalated, within mere seconds, Ryan injects herself with a cure, as does Sophie and Marcus, followed by Marcus stabbing Lazlo to death.

6. Alice takes some dead trimmings from Poison Ivy from Mary’s office, delivering them to Renee, to help find Poison Ivy. Renee shows her concern as the only way her trimmings die is if she has infected another person, which appears, in this case, would be Mary.

What I Disliked

Comes to something when Alice is the only one who notices somethings up with Mary. Mary has been completely forgotten about by the team for the past few episodes and it’s a shame given how loyal she’s always been!

Favourite Moment

Jada is going to take a standout this week. I completely feel for her character now we know more of her Story with Marcus. She’s given up a lot to try and save him, which unfortunately included Ryan. But I have to respect her reasoning behind everything, this story really has made a huge turn for her character.

Standout Character

Very very unexpected turn for Marcus’s character as we learn all about his back story from Jada. When Marcus was younger his school bus was hijacked by the Joker. During the Hijacking The Joker pulled out his Joy buzzer and Charged it against Demarcus’s forehead, changing the little boy who Jada once knew. He became a Sociopath and even went as far as killing his own Father. In the clips we see his temperament changing as the years go on. This was why Jada wanted the Freeze Serum, as she wanted to try and fix him, as others had failed. Jada also says this is why she had to keep Ryan away, to keep her safe. A very interesting storyline and I can’t wait to see what it leads to! As the scene comes to an end we see Marcus smear Lazlo’s blood around his mouth. This has been the best scene from the season by far!

Verdict

Apart from the slight hiccup regarding Mary’s character and the way the team isn’t even acknowledging her, this has been an amazing episode. I love the route it’s going down with Ryans’ family and I can’t wait to see more from them.
