The potential new rumor coming from the world of Star Wars gaming is that fans could be in store for a third game. Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly exploring a new Star Wars Battlefront game, with DICE and Bungie emerging as possible developers.
The information surfaced today through gaming journalist Jeff Grubb, who discussed claims originally published in Electronic Gaming Monthly; however, there’s an important distinction: this new game has not officially been greenlit, and there is no confirmation that development has started.
The rumor comes from Electronic Gaming Monthly issue 265, specifically its rumor section written under the pseudonym Quarterman. According to the report, Disney has ambitious plans for the future of the Battlefront franchise; Lucasfilm is actively searching for a development partner; EA and DICE are reportedly among the studios being considered; Bungie is another potential candidate; no studio has reportedly secured the project; and the game has not been confirmed as entering active development.
The report specifically suggests that Lucasfilm recognises the lasting popularity of the 2017 video game. Especially after the recent rise in the game in the last couple of years.
According to Jeff Grubb, Disney still has reservations about its historical relationship with EA, which could potentially make Bungie more attractive, although there is no verified decision favoring either studio.
Despite releasing in November 2017 and receiving its final major content update in April 2020, the game has continued attracting players. In May 2025, it experienced a substantial resurgence, reaching approximately 9,777 concurrent Steam players within a 24-hour period, its strongest showing in more than four years at that point. The revival coincided with renewed Star Wars interest, community activity and content creators returning to the game.
