Kyle Chandler initially seemed like an unconventional choice for Hal Jordan when he was cast, but Lanterns has proved that this was exactly the reason why Kyle was cast in this role. He isn’t playing Hal at the beginning of his story, but he’s playing the man left behind by that story.
The man who lived that legend
Kyle Chandler doesn’t need Hal’s origin story. His performance gives the impression that the fearless test pilot, reckless Green Lantern, and cosmic adventures are already behind those eyes. This version of Hal feels like someone who has spent years flying into impossible situations and somehow surviving them.
Age of Hal Jordan
This was one of the biggest concerns surrounding Chandler’s casting, but Lanterns turns it into an advantage. This Hal we see in this show is experienced, weathered, and imperfect. He’s no longer trying to prove he’s fearless. Hal is a deeply flawed guy beneath the Green Lantern mythology.
The Jordan/Stewart Chemistry
Hal and John don’t feel like the typical superhero type. Chandler brings the veteran perspective, while John represents a different generation and approach. Their disagreements make the partnership interesting. The experienced Hal alongside a younger John creates a veteran-and-rookie dynamic, and Chandler can convincingly switch between mentor, partner, and someone who occasionally gets on John’s nerves.
Hal’s Quiet Side
Hal Jordan can easily become “cocky space cop with a magic ring.” Chandler gives him much more underneath that. His facial expressions, pauses, and delivery sell the weight of everything Hal has experienced. Chandler fits the grounded, investigative tone extremely well, almost giving Hal an old-school lawman quality.
Once The Greatest Green Lantern
Chandler doesn’t necessarily need to constantly show us prime Hal. His performance makes you believe this older man was once the guy who would fly directly at something everyone else was running from. The humour, stubbornness, confidence, courage, and occasional arrogance are there. Chandler just filters those traits through a Hal who’s been doing this for a very long time. The show does a great job of speaking about Hal’s legendary heroics, from multiple news reports to talking about taking down Sinestro.
