Lanterns “Trust Fall” Review

Season 1 Episode 2 – While John’s middling errand ultimately proves eventful, Hal makes waves in Rushville – which only inspires him to dig deeper.

Highlights

1. Hal attempting to teach John how to fly was an interesting start. It doesn’t exactly go well, as John instead creates an actual living bird, which seemingly even shocks Hal. It was a fun opening segment as we finally see John properly use the ring, even if he doesn’t exactly succeed at what he was trying to do.

2. When John shows up at Hal’s house to collect the Lantern, he arrives at a huge mansion. Hilariously, the first question John asks is how much Lanterns are paid. It’s a very good question, in all honesty. We also see John go through Hal’s wardrobe, where we get a look at the suits, before getting our first proper shot of the Lantern itself, hidden inside a pocket-dimension watch. Seemingly, Hal’s also carrying around a dead body, and I just couldn’t care less. I’m much more focused on the suit and the Lantern.

3. As John prepares to leave Hal’s home and head back, he’s ambushed, tasered and thrown into a van. The green bird actually manages to assist John, allowing him to fight back against his captors. It’s a fantastic fight scene that shows John’s initiative and quick thinking, while also bringing back the construct he accidentally created earlier in the episode.

4. Hal really doesn’t help himself, does he? He literally never stops talking. Will threatens him, the Sheriff backs it up, and he still keeps going. He does make a good point on the technology front, though. Why does Will have such advanced technology at the school football gates? I am curious, and there’s clearly something more going on here. Obviously, Hal does eventually get shot.

5. Interestingly, the Sheriff mentions that she’s originally from Gotham. When I’m completing these reviews, I always have IMDb open so I can remember people’s names. I’m terrible for that. Anyway, colour me surprised when I see her name is actually Kerry “Kane”. This could possibly have links to the Kane family, which ties directly into Batman and Batwoman. Considering the episode specifically mentions Gotham before revealing that surname, it feels like a brilliant little Easter egg. Could it possibly lead into something bigger than that?!

6. Hal charges the ring using the famous Green Lantern oath. He half-arses it, obviously, but it’s still so damn nice to finally hear it. It’s another one of those moments that makes the show feel increasingly connected to the wider Green Lantern mythology.

What I Didn’t Work

Standout Character

I am going to give it to Hal Jordan this week. He had me laughing throughout the episode and, honestly, it feels like peak Hal Jordan. He’s cocky, sarcastic and seemingly incapable of keeping his mouth shut, even when doing so would probably be in his best interest. Yet underneath all of the jokes, you can still see just how experienced and capable he is as a Green Lantern.

I especially loved the ending, where he finally put all of those jokes aside, suited up and got to work. It was a great reminder that despite his personality, this is still Hal Jordan, one of the greatest Green Lanterns. This version of Hal really shows just how great the character could have been on the big screen if the movie had gotten him right back in the day.

Favorite Moment

The episode ends with Hal Jordan finally putting on the suit and flying to a prison. He ends up heading there to see none other than Sinestro! This is getting great. What an ending.
