The Penguin “Top Hat” Review

Season 1 Episode 7 – “Oz fights to preserve his family and his enterprise, while Sofia makes a shocking discovery”

Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. The episode begins with a flashback to a young Oz at home with his mother and two brothers. You can see just how much Oz truly loves his mother. This was not just a connection after his brothers had gone but from a young age, it was this deep-rooted connection.

2. We get to see what happened to Oz’s brothers. Essentially when they were young they were playing tag, but the brothers hid where Oz could not reach because of his leg. Oz being Oz locked them in a room and with heavy rain in the city, it flooded.

3. In the present, Oz arrives back and sees the aftermath of when Sofia visited the home where they were hiding out. Oz finds a beaten Victor with Sal turning up shortly after. Oz tells Victor to go get him an “army” to face Sal and Sofia head-on.

4. Oz takes Sal to where the drugs are being made. Oz being Oz has planned for this and Oz’s workers knock out the power and take control of Sal and his men while Oz and Sal fight. In the middle of the fight with Oz, Sal has a heart attack. Oz unloads an entire magazine clip into the dead Sal, just to confirm the kill.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report again this week.

Favorite Moment

Oz tells Sofia to come get the keys to the kingdom but to bring his mother back without harming her. Oz sets up a plan but a black G-Wagon pulls up then Sofia calls Oz. Sofia tells Oz that she left him a present. Oz opens the boot and sees a bomb. OZ manages to hide in the same room he trapped his brothers in before the explosion.

Standout Character

I’m stuck on who to choose as the standout this week. It’s between both Oz and Sofia. I’m going to give this to OZ based on the flashbacks alone.

Verdict

This episode was very much a chess game between Oz and Sofia. They both went move for move with Sofia coming out on top as they literally blew a part of the city up. The story was fantastic which slipped back and forth between the present day and the younger days for Oz.
