Look, I’m in no way shape, or form agreeing or disagreeing that Rey is a good or bad character. I lean towards the better side as I believe there is a lot to like about Rey’s character. I feel up until now, it’s just been poor writing.
It was confirmed a while ago that Daisy Ridley will return to her role in a movie set after the events of Rise of Skywalker. This is where I’m quite excited…
Now of course it depends on multiple factors but the reason I’m excited is due to the creativity that will allow the saga to move past the Skywalker era (in theory despite her taken surname). The movie will have complete freedom to create something new as this is largely unchartered territory.
Understandably, the factors mentioned before will rely on things like the script, the supporting cast, the Directors and so much more to give us a project that Star Wars fans can be proud of.
I know that’s easier said than done as the Star Wars fanbase is seemingly one of the toughest to please however there needs to be some care that goes into it. The Acolyte was a failure right from the get-go because it felt like everyone was defensive before the show even came out. I understand why in my opinion as it felt like the show already failed before an episode even aired.
Star Wars has been on a rocky course for years. Even the Prequels were hated at the time and thankfully due to a new generation of fans, the Prequels are held dearly which I’m thankful for but since Disney took the reigns, there hasn’t been a lot that’s been overly praised. The Mandalorian and Rogue One are 2 projects that come to mind out of many.
Where Rey steps in here is to take the franchise forward. We’re constantly stuck in this era of the Empire or remnants of the Empire whereas Rey will be able to focus ahead on a completely new adventure. There is potential here and it needs to capitalize on what went wrong during the Sequel trilogy. It felt cheap during that because, well, this…
As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, Rey’s character has a lot of potential which went unused during the 3 movies we got simply because they tried so hard to do fan service and not really having a clue as to what’s going on. A switch in Director mid-way through the trilogy also didn’t help matters either.
Bringing someone in who can give Rey the proper development she needs, a history, a future and a present needs to all be done because even though we got 3 full films with her, we still don’t know much about her.
The movie was initially scheduled for 2026 but has been pulled from the calendar and delayed, which was to be expected anyway because The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is set for the same year.
I am looking forward to it, and I hope they pay homage to the fans and give them a proper experience, as it’s needed. We haven’t had a Star Wars movie since May 2018, which is over six years ago.
