It’s now been over 6 years since one of the greatest movies of all time was released in theatres worldwide. The hype for this movie was unlike anything I have ever seen before.
We had to wait an entire year between Infinity War and Endgame, which in itself was torture. The speculation online was monumental. It felt like when it came to the superhero world, Marvel had the entire genre on lockdown.
Is it surprising? They built Endgame over 11 years and 21 movies. All of them, slowly but surely building up to this epic event that will probably never be matched again.
It’s no surprise Marvel and Disney intend to re-release the movie back into theatres. Here is what we know:
- 25th September, 2026, is the release date
- Unconfirmed if there will be any new footage
- Seemingly nostalgic hype building towards Avengers: Doomsday
Endgame actually became the highest-grossing movie of all time until Avatar did a sneaky surprise re-release in 2021, allowing it to reclaim the top spot. Likely, Endgame could easily take that #1 spot back.
The current standings at the time of writing (according to Box Office Mojo):
- Avatar – $2,923,710,708
- Endgame – $2,799,439,100
This means Endgame only has to make up $124,271,608 to tie Avatar. When Avatar re-released in China, it amassed $57m, allowing it to reclaim the throne. This was just a single country, though. The current $124 million gap isn’t from that one re-release alone; Avatar has had several smaller re-releases since 2021, gradually widening the total. A worldwide release of Endgame could easily push it over $3 billion. After all, despite Marvel’s shortcomings in recent years, it’s still an extremely loved franchise.
You only have to look at when Marvel announced the cast for Doomsday to see the incredible hype the movie has, and it’s barely even done much with Dr Doom in recent films. Adding in an Endgame re-release seems strategic, but financially strategic, too. It’s a way to remind audiences what peak Marvel looked like before diving headfirst into their next major event.
Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World were about rebuilding the Avengers. Fantastic Four showed Doom for the first time. There hasn’t been this build-up that Thanos had, and fans are still waiting for that sense of looming danger to really kick in. The re-release of Endgame almost acts as a bridge between Marvel’s best era and the one they’re trying to rebuild now.
I’ll go and see it. Just to feel what it felt like back in 2019 again. Watching one of the greatest movies in history on the big screen, one more time. The cinema is one of my favourite places to go, Endgame is one of my favourite movies, and it’s like the perfect combination. I’m beyond excited to get back into the Avengers hype all over again.
Roll on 2026.
