Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. It wouldn’t be a Gen V series without several scientists dying in excruciating ways right at the beginning. Lovely. Dr. Godolkin is one of the scientists there, so this does add a layer of intrigue as we see what happened at the beginning.

2. “For Chance” is the message at the beginning. The writers were quick to make this a focal point by killing his character off-screen inside the prison where they were held.  I think this was the best move for the show moving forward, as sad as it is. Rest easy, Chance Perdomo.

3. Marie gets into her first altercation of the second season, and what a moment it was. She takes down 4 guys with relative ease, whilst also showing us how far she’s come in terms of controlling her powers. It was a brutal scene as she barely even moved to take all 4 of them down. They didn’t stand a chance.

4. Emma unintentionally shrinks after being stressed at the party. As she ends up super drunk and on drugs, she sees a video of the backlash from Marie’s attack on the 4 guys from earlier. She hilariously runs through the house with the phone above her head, as she’s so small. I couldn’t help but laugh.

5. The unexpected turns continue. Emma and Jordan finally stumble across Marie before they’re interrupted by Cate. Cate reads Marie’s mind and finds out about her interaction with Starlight. She then heads to control her mind before Jordan hits her with a blast, which cracks her skull. She appears to die there and then, which would’ve set the tone for the series.

What I Disliked

However, despite loving this scene, I didn’t like how it was followed by a trailer, where Cate shows up, ultimately nullifying this moment immediately. In what capacity that is, I don’t know, but it stripped the shock back quickly.

Favorite Moment

More action commences. Dogknott is hunting down Marie. He does it in such an utterly disturbing way, but it wouldn’t be The Boys universe if it weren’t. He eventually finds Marie in her motel room, which forces Marie to defend herself. Then the best damn moment happens! As Marie is about to lose, she’s saved by Starlight. I was not expecting Starlight to be in the show, and I am so happy to see her.

Standout Character

I do think I have to give this to Marie in the opening episode. She was fantastic. Her action sequences were very well done. She’s still a major threat and could possibly be one of the major players in finally taking Homelander down.

Verdict

Gen V wasted no time getting right back into the swing of things. For some reason, I was a bit skeptical that it could continue the way it did after a fantastic first season, but this episode proved me wrong almost instantly. A solid opener, and I’m already excited to watch the second and third episodes, which were released alongside the first.

Rating 9.2/10
