Fallout “The Demon in the Snow” Review

Season 2 Episode 4 – Rock to spear and so on…

What I Liked

1. Seeing the Alaskan Front is absolutely brilliant. We know that America went to war with China here, which America did win at the time. In the same breath, we got to see our first Deathclaw in live-action, too and what a moment that was. I can’t think of a better way to open up an episode.

2. Lucy gets an offer from the NCR members left to join up. They do manage to save her after her interaction with Caesar’s Legion. Lucy politely declines in favour of looking for her father, but it’s nice to actually get confirmation that Cooper didn’t sell out the NCR members.

3. Lucy becomes addicted to buffout. That’s the drug she’s given to heal her. I find it hilarious that they’ve gone down this route, considering how easy it is to become addicted to drugs in the game. A brilliant and hilarious nod.

4. After Xander is killed, Thaddeus rocks the armour as they both head back to the base. Maximus doesn’t even look fussed at this stage, but thankfully, we do see the human side of him. He asks for Dane to get the kids of the Brotherhood safe so he can carry out his mission. That mission is to attempt to kill Quintus. Albeit he backs off but we’re seeing a Maximus that’s a far cry away from the version we saw last season, and it’s great.

5. The Brotherhood completely implodes from within as all of the leaders have differing ideas on how they want to lead. Seeing one of the leaders have a knife shoved through their cheek was lovely. I was actually eating at the time. It shows how brutal the Fallout world truly can be.

6. Lucy and Ghoul reach New Vegas, but it’s deserted. This is another moment that I got excited over, seeing New Vegas in a live-action setting, seeing how amazing it looks was good. Now, we knew from the trailers Lucy and Cooper would fight a deathclaw… here we go. It’s a shame the episode ends but roll on next week.

What I Disliked

This week’s episode felt a lot shorter than the others. That’s my only dislike this week. I felt like we could’ve at least seen the ending fight with the Deathclaw to make it have more of an impact.

Favorite Moment

We got our first glimpse of the Kings. They’re recognisable from the New Vegas game. Lucy doesn’t want to take a detour; she wants to go straight through to the strip. She barely even hesitates before she starts shooting. As she’s addicted to the buffout, her reactions are amusing. I also love the nod to the V.A.T.S. system when she fires the final shot.

Standout Character

Lucy was the easiest standout this week. Seeing her become addicted to buffout and go berserk at the ghouls at the New Vegas entrance was tremendously done. Because she was addicted to the drug, we saw a completely different side to her, one that I found hyper entertaining.

Verdict

Episode 4 felt much shorter in comparison to the others. It offered our usual video game nods, the over-the-top violence that comes within the Fallout universe and the on-edge stories surrounding characters like Steph and Norm. It was a great episode, no doubt; however, when you compare it to the 3 previous episodes of the season so far, it’s definitely the weakest out of the 4.
