What I Liked
1. It would seem like New Vegas isn’t just tormented by one Deathclaw but, in fact, several. It’s an intense opening scene as we begin exactly where we left off. Thankfully, Dogmeat manages to find his way out with Lucy and Cooper following. I wasn’t expecting to start eating my sandwich with such intensity, but I guess this is Fallout.
2. It feels somewhat weird seeing Lucky 38’s upper floors in live-action. It felt nostalgic more than anything. I’ve run through that very floor in the game, looting everything I could find once upon a time. They’ve done well bringing the casino to life, more so, doing it in a pre-war setting.
3. The snake oil salesman from last season, who made Thaddeus turn into a ghoul, is hit with a crowbar by Hank and kidnapped. He basically runs his very own human experiment on him, continuing his mind control project. We seemingly see Hank’s work pay off. I thought the salesman was laying on thick; however, it would appear not. The show left us in complete suspense, thinking his head was going to pop.
4. We finally understand where Barbara and Janey are. It was predictable in all honesty, but they’re at the Vault-Tec place that Hank is at. It’s nice to see the show fully confirm that they’re there, alive, and frozen.
5. Lucy’s attempts to be a good person continue to go sideways. It’s very similar to the games in that aspect; it’s difficult to be a good guy all the way through. She enters the store to buy Addictol, a way to cure her from addiction. As she enters, a weird guy is there and barely hesitates before going for a gun. Lucy shoots first, but it wasn’t easy. She did throw a couple of warnings first before shooting. It shows how brutal the Wasteland can be.
6. Mr. House throws every single spanner into the works when it comes to who dropped the bombs. It was always up in the air originally, America or China? Now, we thought we had it settled; it was Vault-Tec. Judging by Robert House’s manic outburst, it would appear we could all be wrong. Interestingly, something so simple can be so unanswered in so many games, lore, books, and now a TV show…
What I Disliked
Ronnie finds out Norm has been lying to the group. He doesn’t wait around before grabbing a power cord and wrapping it around his neck. That sequence ends there with Norm struggling to catch his breath. I’ve got to be honest, this entire arc of the story has been the most boring so far. Despite them finding the Vault-Tec public building, it feels flat above all else.
Favorite Moment
Hank succeeds with the experiment completely. He sends his new puppet to locate Lucy, and he does so. The offers straight forward. Cooper takes Lucy back to her vault, and Hank leaves Cooper’s family alone. Cooper is hesitating, but he explains to Lucy that she was always a bargaining chip, and this, this is the bargain. When you look at Cooper, it’s blatant that he hates what he’s doing. The series has taken an extremely intriguing turn, and when I say intriguing, holy moly! Lucy hits Cooper with a damn power fist! He flies out of the window, and he’s impaled. What a brutal way to end the episode, even more so after Hank shows up.
Standout Character
I think purely for how the episode ended, Lucy is getting my vote for standout character. I don’t need to explain much more than what I already typed in the last paragraph. She was tremendous this week.
Verdict
5 episodes in, and we’re now seriously heating up when it comes to the main aspect of the story. It felt a bit slower than normal as the episode began, but by the end of the episode, I was in disbelief at what I just saw. Norm and his group continue to be the weaker aspect of the series, although there’s still plenty of time to make this interesting. Besides that, it’s so damn entertaining.
