We Went Back to Star Wars Battlefront 2… And It’s Still Incredible

I still remember the catastrophic release of Battlefront 2 back in 2017. It’s genuinely wild that a game with that kind of reputation can still pull you back in years later, but Battlefront 2 absolutely does.

The game was filled with microtransactions and predatory content from the moment it dropped, and that reputation stuck. Thankfully, over 8 years later, the game’s nowhere near the poor state it was in back then.

The game can still provide hours of entertainment without needing to spend a single penny. I re-purchased the game for £5.39 on the PlayStation Store, and it doesn’t get much better than that. At that price, it isn’t even a debate; it’s basically a takeaway coffee for a full Star Wars sandbox.

I loaded into the co-op missions to get a feel for the game, and I quickly fell in love with the experience all over again. Co-op is the perfect “warm-up” mode. You get the chaos and the heroes without being instantly deleted by people who never stopped playing.

Getting to play as Darth Vader and deflect blaster bolts whilst marching forward feels as close to the Star Wars experience as it gets. The heavy footsteps, the breathing, the way blaster fire turns into fireworks on his saber… It’s ridiculous.

It clicks almost immediately. It’s one of those experiences that doesn’t take a lot of time to get back into. The controls feel familiar almost instantly, the correct upgrades are quick to understand, and the battles become entertaining. That’s the magic: it’s easy to re-learn, but there’s still enough depth to keep you chasing “one more game.”

During the first match back, I told my friends that I called dibs on Vader. I’ve embedded a short clip from our first match back, and it’s as Star Wars as it gets. The sound, the graphics, and the feel of it are exceptionally well done.

Did EA end the support too early for Battlefront 2?

I believe they did. The game, even today, still has so much potential. The graphics still hold up, the game has a solid spread of modes now, and the hero roster is stacked; it’s hard not to imagine what another year or two of updates could’ve looked like.

Even just a handful of extra drops would’ve kept the momentum going. More Clone Wars love, Scarif as a proper battlefield, or a couple of new heroes to keep the meta fresh. Some of the factions I would’ve loved to see are:

  1. Mandalorians
  2. Old Republic
  3. Bounty Hunters
  4. Nightsisters

The community is still thriving. I’ve never waited to get into a game. Even in the co-op missions, there are three of us playing, and we always have a teammate ready to go. That’s what makes the game so special. You rarely see a game like this continue to be played daily by so many.

That launch did real damage, and I don’t think the game ever fully won back the trust it lost, which is a shame, because the version that exists now is genuinely great.

Battlefront 2 is the definition of a comeback story. It shouldn’t work as well as it does in 2026… but it does. And for £5.39? It’s an absolute steal.
