What I Liked
1. The episode kicks off without skipping a beat. Starlight vs Black Noir, Homelander being exposed on stage with the Flight 37 video way back when. It took its time for that footage to be revealed. The show honestly never missed a beat. Starlight looked fantastic in the Firecracker outfit.
2. Ashley is now the Vice President. She steps in to help with the cover-up for the fight footage. It does go to show how much a large scale expose can be covered up. It’s no surprise there are so many conspiracies out there. The cover-up even on the show, is brilliantly done.
3. Butcher visits his father, and they have one hell of an intense conversation. Butcher feels more unhinged than he ever has before as he doesn’t hold back in his words.
4. Kimiko having a full-blown conversation with Starlight is brilliant. This is another thing that I feel like has been a long time coming, just like the Flight 37 video. It feels like the show is trying to wrap up loose ends, which I’m happy with.
5. I love the reference to Reacher within the show. It’s always nice when we see small Amazon crossovers with their shows.
6. Homelander turns up at the Vought prison camp to have a conversation with Hughie. The dynamic between the two has always been interesting, but Homelander tries to get into his head. It’s worse because Homelander knows full well he’s in control here. He even starts throwing out why Starlight chose him in the beginning of it all.
7. A-Train does show up to Kimiko and Starlight but disagrees to help due to the need to protect his family, especially against a Vought prison. As A-Train heads back home to France, Deep follows him. I was truly hoping for a fight here, especially after Deep threatens A-Train’s family. It’s intense, but it’s clear that A-Train has Deep fully mapped out, more so, how scared Deep is of Homelander.
8. It wouldn’t be a Boys episode without someone’s powers being more screwed up than initially thought. The Worm digs himself holes, but he sucks it all up, and it comes out of his backside. Hilarious, as always.
9. The group ends up in the prison camp, but Homelander has MM, Frenchie, and Hughie all tied up. It’s a trap, and Kimiko gets lasered in half instantly. Just as Homelander is about to strike further, Starlight takes full control of the light and almost blinds Homelander. Kimiko and Frenchie eventually kiss whilst she’s still sliced in half. The entire scene is pure chaos, and I love it. We’ve got Butcher in a fight, MM in a fight, Starlights flying off, and Hughie stuck in the middle. It’s amazing.
10. Homelander is on the chase as A-Train attempts to escape. He almost does an episode 1 again, but narrowly misses an innocent woman, and because of this, he loses control and goes flying through the forest, allowing Homelander to catch up. A-Train doesn’t hold back in his words, causing Homelander to snap his neck. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to dislike this because I love A-Train; it’s a shame, and I do hope this actually isn’t the end for him.
What I Disliked
A-Train having his neck snapped just as he began to come into his own as a hero was a little disappointing. However, I do understand there’s been very little main characters being killed off, and we’re 5 seasons in, it makes sense even if I hope it isn’t the last we see of him.
Favorite Moment
The woman Hughie is trying to help is lasered in the head by Homelander. He grabs Hughie and demands that Butcher head out. As Butcher walks out, A-Train is here, and we get an incredible X-Men or Sonic scene. He saves Hughie from also being lasered. The group does eventually manage to escape thanks to A-Train’s save. What a moment.
Standout Character
It’s a tough one to choose this episode, as so many characters stood out in their own way. There is one, though, that I believe JUST edges it, and that’s Homelander. He’s as sadistic as always. Almost slaughtering a room full of people when the Flight 37 footage aired, to then covering it up. I also loved the fact that he was one step ahead of everyone in this episode, very nearly having Hughie for breakfast.
Verdict
An exceptional start to the fifth and final season. It never let up from the first minute. We got questions answered, tensions heating up once more, and a whole ride on our hands; it’s difficult not to give this episode a 10/10, even with the death at the end of the episode. It shows that the showrunners will wrap this up when it comes to the end.
