Let's TalkVideo Games

Why Marvel Needs to Step Up When it Comes to Video Games

One of the biggest IP’s on the planet. Marvel storm the way when it comes to TV, movies, and merchandise. You will likely never meet a person who isn’t familiar with a few characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, one department in where Marvel just completely and utterly fails is video games. Name me one game where you sit back and say; “this is one of my favourite games of all time” – you just don’t, and why? Because there are no games that truly stand out.

Oh, and Spider-Man’s games do NOT count. That’s done by Sony and Insomniac, not Marvel and Disney**

So, what do we have? Marvel’s Avengers and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, both published by Square Enix.

Marvel’s Avengers still has a bad rep from release, and despite it slowly getting better it’s still never going to be on a level of that from other IP’s which I will get into soon.

Guardians of the Galaxy looks bang average. We put a post out on Facebook a while ago which asked you to kill one game, and have one game now.

The choices were;

  1. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
  2. Gotham Knights
  3. Spider-Man 2
  4. Guardians of the Galaxy

In 99% of comments from that post, they killed Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite Guardians looking quite fun, it’s definitely going to be a very linear game that will likely get boring after a couple of days, and I can’t see much replayability once the main campaign is complete.

The possibilities within Marvel when it comes to games are endless. The potential is massive, but yet as of now, there’s just nothing planned. Let’s now take a look at other IP’s which include DC and Star Wars.

DC

  1. Gotham Knights
  2. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
  3. Injustice 3

Star Wars

  1. Jedi: Fallen Order 2
  2. Ubisoft Open-World Game
  3. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
  4. Rumoured KOTOR remake
  5. EA’s announced game

Despite a lot of the Star Wars games not named, we do know the above are coming with the exception of KOTOR, which has been heavily rumoured to be in early production.

Marvel have 1 in the pipeline, which is just such a shame. Comic styled games are always my most fun to play. Jedi: Fallen Order, Injustice 2, the Arkham trilogy and even Battlefront 2 were super great. (Battlefront 2 had a fantastic redemption story after constant work and updates by the devs).

There is plenty of characters that could have a game handed to them. On the PS3 and Xbox 360, both Iron Man and Captain America had games that were enjoyable, so we know they have the potential to do it.

Marvel is my favourite IP out of the 3, it’s the reason why I have Deadpool and Iron Man tattoos on the top of my right arm, I am just a huge fan. I am also a huge fan of video games, which is why I want Marvel to do better in this department.

Marvel are killing the TV and movie side right now, and that’s very likely to NOT let up in the near future, and I know given the funding from Disney, they absolutely have the potential to do some special things.

If Sony can do it with Spider-Man, and make a truly memorable game, then Marvel and Disney can do the same.
