A few weeks back, a mysterious countdown appeared on a website that’s designed to look like a Fallout map. When you click on the map, it shows icons that link to the TV series itself. It provides additional information on the lore, points of interest, and more.
The icon with the countdown leads towards the season 2 finale, which happens on February 4th. It’s not exactly news at this point. Everyone is fully aware of the countdown, but nobody understands exactly what it is in relation to.
Due to the media coverage on the countdown, wild rumours have escalated as a result. I don’t blame them either. During season 1, Bethesda dropped a next-generation update to Fallout 4 out of nowhere. This update felt revolutionary, even causing a mass amount of people to flood back to the game due to the success of the show.
This is why, for me, I believe Bethesda could be plotting something incredible here. This would be either a remaster of Fallout 3 or New Vegas. Either game would be a delight. Oblivion had huge success with its remaster. It showed just how much appetite there is for revisiting Bethesda’s older worlds with modern improvements.
They will likely know the hype this countdown has received. Outlets have covered it extensively. Once that happens, anything less than a major reveal risks feeling underwhelming, regardless of its actual importance. If it’s not a remaster, I feel like it could hurt the hype more than a simple reveal or “hey, we’re renewing Fallout for season 3”. We know Prime likes to renew shows very quickly, so this wouldn’t be sufficient for a full-blown countdown at this stage. I feel like it wasn’t something as huge as this; they may have come out already by this point.
In the same breath, though, it feels unrealistic. As exciting as the idea is, this is where reality starts to creep in. Would they really drop an entire game on that day? It could be a reveal, that’s true, but a full release seems incredibly unlikely. There would need to be plans for stores to receive the listing. Xbox, PlayStation, PC stores, and more. I can’t see the game just appearing and being ready to launch on that specific day.
I’d adore either a 3 or New Vegas remaster. If this truly does happen, I’d be ecstatic. Fallout is one of my favourite franchises. I’ve loved each game, and the series is phenomenal as well. Either remaster would be a day 1 purchase.
People have their thoughts about 4. 3, and New Vegas are universally loved within the franchise. I can only imagine the success that would come with either remaster. Some outlets are speculating that we could even get both. That would be an epic moment in gaming history if that were to happen.
Thankfully, at this stage, there isn’t long to wait now. It’s less than 2 weeks until that specific reveal. Hopefully, it’s as big as I hope the season 2 finale will be. Either way, it’s reminded me just how much Fallout still means to me.
