What I Liked
1. It’s brilliant to finally see Macauley Culkin in the show as a member of Caesar’s Legion. I wasn’t quite expecting him to slit the lady’s throat Lucy attempted to save last episode, but here we are.
2. So it’s confirmed that Edward Sallow (original leader of Caesar’s Legion) is dead. However, what’s interesting here is that the show doesn’t specify how he died. This still somewhat leaves interpretation open for the game’s endings, but I think we can almost safely assume that Caesar died during the events of the New Vegas video game. Caesar’s Legion is in the middle of a civil war, with only a small wall separating the two sides. It’s an interesting dynamic as they fight against each other due to disagreeing with each other’s heir to Edward Sallow.
3. The Brotherhood just made a crucial character reference. Roger Maxson. The founder of the Brotherhood of Steel. It’s also even further beautiful to hear the Maxson name, as it could directly tie in to Arthur Maxson, a direct descendant of Roger.
4. Xander’s conversation with Maximus is interesting. He explains that each Brotherhood chapter is slightly different, and the one Maximus is operating within sucks. He’s not wrong. It’s felt different from some of the chapters we’ve seen in the games before. Fallout 4, whilst still preserving pre-war tech, they did genuinely care to an extent. Xander offers Maximus a further conversation, where Maximus agrees. I like where this is going.
5. The Ghoul manages to escape and locates Lucy fairly quickly. He is confused by the two leaders in the Legion. He then goes to find help by locating the NCR, only to find it empty with 1 small exception. Victor. A robot that fans of the New Vegas games will be all familiar with.
6. Seeing the NCR armor in live action warms my heart so much! It’s nice to see them properly introduced, even if it’s not in the greatest circumstances.
7. Xander and Maximus going on a journey, heading out into a building in power armor was hilarious. Xander fighting against one Secuiriton robot with Maximus watching on was a perfect moment.
8. Thaddeus is running a weird operation with children who are ghouls. The facility Maximus and Xander stumble onto is the same one Thaddeus is working out of. Xander, still firmly believing in the Brotherhood’s ideology of destroying anything non-human, he prepares to massacre the kids and Thaddeus until Maximus intervenes. He’s basically just caused a war. What a way to end the episode.
What I Disliked
Nothing to report this week.
Favorite Moment
The Ghoul manages to save Lucy. In doing so, he provides the Legion with the remaining NCR’s location. At least that’s what we believed at first. It turns out, Cooper lights the dynamite, which then blows up the wall separating Caesar’s Legion. This is a power move I didn’t see coming. I’m all for this, and I hope Cooper wouldn’t out the NCR like that. I hope we get to see a further follow-up on the civil war taking place.
Standout Character
The character without a name. Macauley Culkin’s character stood out the most for me. Was it mainly because it’s Macauley Culkin? Perhaps. However, he made an immediate impact, and it felt significant when he took his mask off. He’s the character who genuinely felt more intimidating as the episode progressed when we came to the realisation that he couldn’t be swayed, until the end, but that took something as drastic as the NCR location to do so.
Verdict
Fallout continues to impress. I feel like we’re 3 episodes deep and we’re already off to a better start than the first season. It’s the perfect blend of providing fan service to the games with subtle references, and to first-time viewers getting to see how messed up the world is. Caesar’s Legion was a welcome addition to the show. I hope this isn’t the only time we get to see them moving forward.
