The second Mortal Kombat is not even out yet, and Warner Bros. is already greenlighting the third movie in the trilogy… so what does this say about the second movie?
Warner Bros. is reported to be “so excited” and is convinced that there is a giant fanbase for the third movie. New Line is already gearing up to expand the franchise.

Jeremy Slater is writing the script for the third movie and has stated, “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie, they are so excited, they’re so convinced there is a giant fanbase waiting for it, that they’ve already hired me to start writing the next installment.”
Mortal Kombat 2 was set to hit cinemas this October 24th, but has now been delayed several months and will not release on May 15th, 2026. While the test screenings for the movie have been “strong”, a busy October schedule is probably the most likely reason for the delay.
Mortal Kombat 2 was announced back in January 2021, with Slater, the head writer on Disney+’s Moon Knight series, confirmed to be handling the script. Simon McQuoid is directing the second movie, with Slater writing it. The cast sees the addition of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
Seeing the faith that has been put into this franchise is incredible. Having the third film announced before the release of the second is also amazing to see because I still remember speaking about potentially not even getting a second film.
