Supergirl Movie Review – Strength, Heart and Hope Unite

The Supergirl movie follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a dangerous journey across the galaxy after meeting a young girl seeking justice for her murdered family. Inspired by the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, the film presents a tougher, more emotionally scarred version of Kara, blending cosmic adventure, revenge, and self-discovery as she learns what it truly means to be a hero.

Unlike previous live-action portrayals, Supergirl explores Kara’s life through a more mature and emotionally complex lens. Having witnessed the destruction of Krypton and endured years of hardship on Argo City and the poison of the last remaining people due to Kryptonite. She carries a different perspective from Superman. The film balances breathtaking cosmic action with quieter character moments, aiming to tell a story about resilience, hope, and finding purpose even after experiencing unimaginable loss.

Overview

Supergirl marks the first solo cinematic adventure for Kara Zor-El in the new DC Universe, introducing audiences to a fresh interpretation of one of DC’s most iconic heroes. While Superman represents hope on Earth, Kara’s story takes a very different path, exploring the emotional scars left behind by the destruction of Krypton and the challenges of forging her own identity.

The film draws inspiration from the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series. The film sees Kara embark on a galaxy-spanning journey alongside a young girl seeking justice for her murdered family, while Kara searches for a cure for Krypto. What begins as a simple request for help quickly evolves into a dangerous mission filled with ruthless enemies, unexpected allies, and difficult moral choices.

Rather than being the usual superhero spectacle, Supergirl places a strong emphasis on character development. Kara is portrayed as a more experienced and emotionally burdened hero whose past continues to shape her decisions. Throughout the story, she must confront her own pain while learning that strength comes from compassion as much as power.

The film also expands the scope of the DC Universe by setting the film in deep space instead of on Earth; it transforms the movie into this vibrant cosmic setting. From breathtaking alien worlds, interstellar conflicts, and imaginative science fiction elements that showcase Supergirl’s adventure compared to previous DC films, creating a visually stunning movie across the stars.

With a balance of heartfelt storytelling, action-packed sequences, and moments of humour, the movie aims to present Kara as more than Superman’s cousin. Instead, it establishes her as a compelling hero in her own right. As one of the key projects in DC Studios’ new era, Supergirl has generated significant excitement among comic book fans and newcomers alike. By combining faithful elements from source material with a fresh cinematic vision, the film introduces a new generation to Kara while laying the groundwork for her future within the ever-expanding DC Universe.

Story

One of the things that immediately stood out about Supergirl is how different it feels from previous versions of the character, like Melissa Benoist’s version. It portrays Kara as a drastically different version. Rather than telling another traditional superhero origin story, the film throws audiences into a much larger cosmic adventure that explores who Kara is as a person and what motivates her. It feels like a story that’s just as interested in its characters as it is in the action.

At the heart of the movie is a journey that begins when Kara crosses paths with a young girl determined to avenge the loss of her family. Without revealing too much, the pair set off across the galaxy to search for the man, as he has a cure for Krypto. This mission introduces a variety of new locations, enemies, and challenges. The adventure constantly raises the stakes while giving both characters massive room to grow along the way.

What I enjoyed the most about the story is that it simply isn’t about just defeating a villain and being done with it. It’s about spending time exploring themes such as grief, justice, hope, and the choices people make when they are pushed to their absolute limits. Kara’s experiences have shaped the person she becomes, and the film does a great job of showing both her incredible strength and her emotional vulnerability.

While the action is second to none, the visually impressive moments and the quieter scenes are just as important as the action scenes. They help build the relationships between characters and make the journey feel meaningful instead of simply moving from one fight to the next. By the end, Supergirl feels like a story about finding purpose, standing up for what is right, and proving Kara is much more than Superman’s cousin.

Characters

Milly Alcock as Kara was absolutely great. She delivered an emotional performance and was absolutely fantastic in the quiet moments, as her acting was so good that you noticed her presence everywhere. I think a lot of people wrote Milly off way before she was announced, and her name was only connected to the role, but she absolutely delivered a tremendous performance.

Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll: I can not lie, I haven’t seen Eve in anything beforehand. She was a pleasant surprise in this movie. I thought her acting was incredible, and her story and development were absolutely great. I feel like we could see her character return in a future project.

Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem was so good as a villain. He truly came off as a menace, and he wasn’t just a one-trick pony either. We saw this guy learn about his opponent and use her weakness against her. He might have looked stupid, but he was a smart and ruthless villain.

Jason Momoa as Lobo. This was the perfect casting. This falls in line with David Corenswet as Superman and Robert Pattinson as Batman. Lobo stole the scene every time he was in it with his dialogue. Honestly, I came away from the movie and immediately said, give this man his standalone movie.

The rest of the cast was great from the appearances of Superman to the surrounding characters on Krypton and Argo. The surprise cameo for me, which I immediately recognised, was Seth Rogen. His voice is too noticeable, and he portrayed a great bus driver.

Hype

The excitement surrounding Supergirl has been building for quite some time, and it’s easy to see why. As one of the first major films in the DC Studios’ new era, there’s a lot riding on Kara’s return to the big screen. Critics got to see the movie early, and most of their reviews were not great; ultimately, there is still a certain reason for this, and it will forever follow DC films.

Favorite Moments

1. One of my favorite moments would simply be seeing this version of Kara just going world to world, just partying and getting drunk. It’s a simple thing, but it just shows the traumatic events she’s gone through and how she’s dealing with it. Seeing the difference between her and Clark is absolutely fantastic too.

2. Seeing Krem arrive to get some weapons from the Knoll family and then, without hesitation, just wipe out an entire family simply because the son scared the daughter. This cemented how great this villain would be. Krem was absolutely brutal within this scene.

3. The entire fight scene where Krem and his men come to collect Kara and Ruthye, and it results in an entire fight scene with Kara wiping out many of his men, while Lobo is just fighting everyone to collect a bounty he is after. Honestly, this fight scene was so great, and it showcased how much Kara had to do to protect the ones that she needed and ultimately still failed as a family got killed once again.

4. Another favorite moment for me was simply seeing Kara go to a planet with a green sun. She went there and got the same type of feeling her people did back on Argo. We got to see her slowly die throughout the night until the morning, when it was cutting it close to her death, and we didn’t get to see her recuperate her strength and powers; we just saw a grand entrance.

5. My last favorite moment was simply the end fight. It was incredible to see this powerful, awakened hero coming in to save the day and destroying this army that has terrorized many, many people throughout the galaxy. Stopping Ruthye from killing so her heart can stay pure and sending her away while Supergirl, knowing she has to be the one, kills Krem.

Dislikes

1. A personal dislike is that I wanted more of Lobo within this movie. I feel like while he was in it for the end bit of the movie, we should have had more of him within the movie.

2. Another pick would be seeing the suit. While she did suit up for a good amount of the ending of the movie, I would have liked to see her rock the suit a little bit more.

Recommend?

I would fully recommend this to anyone. I think a lot of people got knocked from seeing this movie due to the critic reviews before the movie, and I went into this and immediately left saying, “another movie that the critics reviewed badly and turns out it was a great movie.”

Amazing

Overall, Supergirl impressed me massively. It delivered everything and more that I hoped. The combination of fantastic action, great visuals, and a story that never lost sight of the characters. Every action sequence feels impactful, but it's the emotional moments and character development that were what truly made the film special. It is one of the strongest entries in DC's new era. I can not wait to see the return of Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
