Marvel Studios made several major announcements during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but one stood out above the rest. Black Panther 3 is officially on the way, with a release date of December 15, 2028.
Perhaps the biggest announcement, however, was the confirmation that David Jonsson has been cast as T’Challa’s son, who will eventually inherit the Black Panther mantle from Shuri.
As expected, the reaction has been mixed. Some fans are thrilled with the decision, while others believe Marvel should never move on from Chadwick Boseman’s version of T’Challa. Honestly, I understand both sides of the argument. But the more I think about it, the more I believe Marvel is making the right call.
Chadwick Boseman is the Black Panther. There will never be another actor who carries the same impact he had on the role, and nobody should expect David Jonsson to replace what Chadwick created. That simply isn’t possible.
However, it’s now been almost six years since Chadwick’s tragic passing. While there was never going to be a perfect time to revisit the character, enough time has passed for Marvel to move the legacy forward without it feeling like they’re trying to replace him.
Although David Jonsson has been cast as T’Challa’s son, he’ll effectively become the franchise’s new T’Challa. It’s a clever way of continuing the character’s legacy while still paying respect to Chadwick Boseman’s version. Rather than pretending the original T’Challa never existed, Marvel is allowing his legacy to live on through the next generation.
Then there’s Shuri.
I think Letitia Wright has done an exceptional job since taking on the mantle in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But I’ve always felt her story was about stepping up when Wakanda needed her most, rather than becoming the permanent Black Panther. Passing the mantle back to T’Challa’s heir feels like a natural progression rather than taking anything away from Shuri’s journey.
We’ve already seen Shuri wearing the Black Panther suit in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, so I fully expect her to continue leading Wakanda before eventually passing the mantle on in Black Panther 3. Personally, I think that’s the right approach.
There was never going to be a perfect solution following Chadwick Boseman’s passing. His loss fundamentally changed the future of the franchise, and understandably so. That’s a testament to just how iconic his portrayal of T’Challa was.
I also have a lot of confidence in David Jonsson. He’s an incredibly talented actor, and I believe he’ll do an excellent job carrying the next chapter of this story while respecting everything that came before him.
My biggest question now is how Marvel plans to handle the timeline. Unless Avengers: Doomsday pushes the MCU forward by several years in a similar way to Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther 3 will likely need a significant time jump to age T’Challa’s son into the hero we’re expecting.
Whatever route Marvel takes, I genuinely believe introducing a new Black Panther through T’Challa’s son is the closest thing to the right decision. It honours Chadwick Boseman’s legacy, allows Shuri’s story to continue, and ensures one of Marvel’s most important heroes has a future.
