Superman & Lois “Haywire” Review

Season 1 Episode 4 – Lois and Chrissy spot Morgan Edge conversing with Mayor Dean and Kyle Kushing, and the two see right through his insincere move to try to win over the town; Clark agrees to help Lois out at a town hall meeting.

What I Liked

1. As always, the episode begins on a high. This episode begins with the debut football game for Jordan, where he wins the game for them. I do hope they include Jon in especially after it feels like he’s being shut out. Clark’s words of motivation were great as well!

2. Sam shows up for the game and also afterwards decides to throw curveballs everywhere with Clark and Lois. I mean, he has a point. The world needs Superman and he’s away from it all, but then I see it from Clark’s side as well. It’s a 50/50 part, especially for Superman trying to balance it all. The show does well in showcasing that.

3. After an altercation at the bar/cafe with Tag and another player, Tag heads home ultimately frustrated being out of the team due to the broken arm. After a meltdown, he attempts to remove the cast but his arm begins to violently shake incredibly quickly, like super speed. This is interesting…

4. I’m actually impressed with Kilgrave’s escape from the prison transfer. The guy literally remains brilliantly calm as he explains to the guards what his “chewing gum” is as he spat it against the other side of the van. He then manages to somehow dupe Superman into attending a false location, I really like this villain already, even if I assume it’s most certainly going to be a one-off thing.

5. As Tag’s vibrations worsen at the party, he leaves and heads to a wood-like area where it’s gone from just his arm to his entire body. He displays speedster like powers, however alongside that seems to be a crazy amount of pain. As Jordan steps in to help, he’s then thrown back and looks injured as Jon rushes over. It’s an intense scene that’s for sure.

6. Here’s where it continues from that, as Superman is completely and utterly pinned down from Kilgrave, using this sonic wave blaster type gun that is clearly destroying his eardrums. Jon hits the Superman button and Clark just claps. That’s it, he claps and he just wipes Kilgrave and his entire team out. Amazing.

7. How smooth is Superman at times though?! Tyler does a fantastic job portraying this, after taking down Kilgrave he just moves in, grabs Tag and takes him to the upper atmosphere of the Earth in order to calm him down. Brilliant, quick, and just sheer class.

8. The very end is just crazy. Sam creates a project 7734 protocol, which is obviously a destroy Superman protocol. It seems like there’s also a reason Morgan Edge is all over Smallville. He uncovers a tremendous amount of kryptonite.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favourite Moment

This is why Lois just deserves all the credit and to be a starring character. The way she stood up to her father in order to protect Clark from his intense parenting was sublime. It really was just an awesome scene that deserves props.

Standout Character

I have to give it again to Lois this week. She’s been a huge part of the show and this week again was no different. The way she stood up to both Edge and her Father in one episode deserves a lot of praise. Just in those two moments alone, that cemented her place as the best live-action Lois Lane.

Verdict

This show just doesn’t let up, and this week again was no different. I feel like I’m writing the same thing every week now. Forget the verdict as such, this episode was a masterpiece.
