We all know the shit storm that Square Enix faced when their game massively undelivered at launch and continuously fell apart even more as each week passed by.
It’s not the repetitive gameplay or the same missions over and over again, it’s the continuous mistakes the developers have made along the way. So many false promises, roadmaps that never work out, and charging ridiculous amounts for terrible copy and painted suits.
As a massive superhero fan, this game should have been scrapped and re-made.
Now, we look ahead to WB Montreal’s first videogame, Gotham Knights. This game looks outstanding and everything Avengers should have done.
Avengers first mistake was thinking a Destiny-styled looter-shooter would work, it didn’t.
Obviously, I haven’t played Gotham Knights yet to give my opinion but that’s not what this is. Avengers should have never gone down the route it did.
Gotham Knights boast a somewhat open-world game with the ability to control one of four heroes, also adding the capability for a friend to drop in and play co-op whenever. You’re playing against the AI and each character plays differently whilst moving differently too. You can also drive vehicles on this instead of running everywhere with Captain America.
For me, Avengers had a very solid story. The actual campaign itself is worth playing for any superhero fan but the only issue is, that it’s not long enough. After the story is over, it’s time for the mindless numbing same activities over and over again. There’s no end in sight.
We have already seen that the game will feature different suits as seen in the Deluxe edition for the Beyond suits. Right off, they look different. Like actual effort has gone into creating them and because of that, I will be purchasing that edition on pre-order. Yes, there are different color variants but at least they recognize these as “colorways” and not new suits.

Avengers developers are lazy. They put the effort into making a suit and then just throwing out different color palettes as different suits. It’s ridiculous.
If Avengers had followed the formula that Gotham Knights has gone now, I can only imagine it would have been much more successful. I understand when you create 6 heroes in Thor, Iron Man, Cap, Widow, Hulk, and Ms. Marvel, it can be difficult to create variation in them but it never had to be like that.
As a result, all the enemies are just robots. You barely ever fight against humans unless you’re fighting a 15ft Taskmaster just spamming and hoping you get your abilities. So far, from what I’m seeing, Gotham Knights isn’t like that and has a combat system fairly similar to the Arkham games with added ultimate and special abilities.
Whenever now I see comments about Avengers, it’s not good. We’ve been fed so many false promises at this point it feels like it’s just lies. We’re almost 2 years into the game and so far, we’ve had Hawkeye and Kate (same styles), Black Panther, and Spider-Man (PlayStation only). Lady Thor will be coming soon and we know she’ll be a Thor copy and paste.
We were supposed to get Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, and more. It’s safe to say a lot of those aren’t happening now which is a damn shame.
The game should have focused on its stronger parts in what the story offered. Not every game needs to be a game that has hundreds of hours of content. If I can squeeze 30-40 hours out of a game and actually enjoy every single moment of it then I’m good with that, honestly.
Avengers have moved the goalposts on multiple occasions making it more difficult for players. I remember losing my save of close to 200 hours because the game didn’t support cloud saves and only local, and my dumbass didn’t back my saves up when the PS5 came out and I stupidly didn’t move my data across. This was largely due to the fact that my FIFA and Call of Duty progress is all cloud-saved.
I am glad Avengers flopped in many ways. It shows that you can’t half-ass a game and expect it to be successful, even if you do have the most popular franchise in the world plastered on the title. I am fully expecting Gotham Knights to blow this game out of the water and prove to developers that you can make a good video game with multiple characters involved.
Gotham Knights is now available to pre-order worldwide.
