Star Wars has always been a story of heroes, hope, and the battle between light and dark. But every so often, the galaxy far, far away slips into something far more unsettling. A dark corridor. The hum of a lightsaber igniting. The slow, mechanical breathing of Darth Vader echoing through the shadows. In moments like these, Star Wars stops feeling like a space adventure and starts to feel like something else entirely, something closer to horror.
From Vader’s relentless hallway assault in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to the sheer dread he spreads across the galaxy, the franchise has already shown it can tap into fear. Which raises an interesting question: should Star Wars finally lean into it and make a true horror-style movie?
For the record, I don’t mean a full-scale 18+ rated slasher horror style movie. What I mean is something sitting around the 15+ with that thriller element that closely hits the horror genre. There’s scope for it. In theory, there have always been horror moments in the Star Wars universe; some of these we just hear about and never see on screen.
There are two characters that spring to mind that could receive this type of movie or series. That’s the obvious Darth Vader and Darth Nihilus. There is an argument for both characters. Let’s discuss them both.
Darth Vader

We’ve already seen Darth Vader go full horror at certain points, but they could definitely level this up. Let’s talk about some of the moments we’ve already seen.
The Rogue One hallway massacre. The screams. The brutality. It’s like a force coming at you that you have no hope of defeating, no matter how hard you try. Vader was effortless when he was force-choking the Rebels and throwing them off the ceiling. They were helpless from the moment he boarded the ship.
We then have the moments in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show. As Vader learns Kenobi is hiding on Mapuzo, he lands there. He brutally begins killing civilians in order to draw Obi-Wan out. There’s no thought process behind it. It’s just dragging them through the street whilst snapping a man’s neck because he could.
There is talk that Vader enjoyed the Lars Homestead murder. He tortured Jedi into his own personal army, the Inquisitorious. He even dragged Obi-Wan into a burning ground just to make him feel what he felt on Mustafar. Even Anakin’s purging of the Jedi Temple was enough to feel eerie; the man slaughtered younglings without hesitation.
In the end, Vader screams “horror”. I have said for many years that Darth Vader deserves a standalone Disney+ series or a movie. I know he’s technically had them with the original 6 movies and the Kenobi series, but I mean in his prime. Focused on him properly. The slow hunts, the brutality, the hatred, the pure rage-mode prime Darth Vader. That’s the version we need.
Darth Nihilus

I’ll be honest, I don’t know a huge amount about Darth Nihilus, but from what I do know, and from what I’ve researched, he is absolutely terrifying. Nihilus existed around 4,000 years before the Skywalker era that most Star Wars fans are familiar with.
Nihilus is more than just a body. He’s essentially a void in the Force, consuming the Force itself. He drains the life energy from individuals, sometimes leaving entire populations dead in an instant. In fact, he nearly wiped out the population of the planet Katarr simply by feeding on the Force there.
Another eerie element is the way Nihilus communicates. He doesn’t really speak normally, his voice is distorted and unnatural, making him feel less like a Sith Lord and more like some kind of supernatural entity.
What makes him even more frightening is that his hunger for the Force is endless. The more he consumes, the worse the hunger becomes, meaning he must continue draining life just to sustain himself.
His design is also perfect for horror:
- cracked white mask
- tattered robes
- hollow presence in the Force
- eerie whisper-like voice
Another unsettling detail is what people feel when he’s nearby. Witnesses describe a sense of dread, weakness, and their connection to the Force fading away. It’s like watching a natural disaster approach, knowing there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
It ultimately took a unique Force anomaly known as Meetra Surik, also called the Exile, to defeat him, someone who was essentially a wound in the Force itself. Without that unique weakness, Nihilus may have continued consuming life across the galaxy.
A character like this shows just how easily Star Wars could explore a true horror-style story if the franchise ever decided to lean into the genre.
If Darth Nihilus represents cosmic horror in the Star Wars universe, then Darth Vader represents something far more personal: the horror of being hunted.
I know the likelihood of Disney ever pulling the trigger on something like this is virtually zero. After all, the merchandise alone for Star Wars is enormous. However, I also never thought we’d see two MCU films drop F-bombs under Disney either, yet here we are. Maybe a darker, horror-style story set in a galaxy far, far away isn’t quite as impossible as it once seemed.
