What I Liked

1. This is an interesting take for the first episode of the new season. In this episode, Bruce attempts to use Gamma to get rid of the Hulk, but in turn, he releases something even worse, which results in the Avengers making mech suits instead. It’s quirky, but I believe they knew that with how the episode opened.

2. Sam and Monica head to an alternate location where they discover a spike, believing there are still more “Hulks,” but we see something far worse. Monica and Sam, in their mech suits, couldn’t do much. We see an alpha Hulk sort of controlling others. It’s impressive, but it’s one of those episodes with “What If…?” where I’m not even sure how they’ll win this.

3. I love a good Avengers Assemble moment. Bruce provides Sam with the Mighty Avengers program, which is basically where their mech suits come together like a Megazord to fight the Hulks. It felt ripped straight from the Power Rangers, but I can’t deny that I loved it.

What I Disliked

1. I do feel like although I did somewhat enjoy this episode for what it was, the voice acting felt extremely lackluster. It even felt like some of the designs of the characters didn’t align very well, especially Bucky who was voiced by Sebastian Stan. It didn’t feel like him or even look like him. I like the idea of the original actors voicing their respective characters but the only character who felt matched from their animated character to their voice was Sam.

2. What If…? is known for taking things too far but the Mega Hulk at the end wasn’t something that even remotely appears interesting. It feels like this has taken it too far, despite the fact the bomb dropping was a great scene, unfortunately from here it fell off.

3. Lastly, there wasn’t really any what-if moment in here. Usually in this series, we see something from what we know to be changed which results in the episode. I never felt like this connected to anything we know of, even the opening scene which replicated the jogging scene between Sam and Steve in The Winter Soldier movie. However, in this scene, it was Bruce who was Sam, and Sam who was Steve. It made little sense.

Favorite Moment

In the end, the fake Megazord gets beaten by the Alpha Hulk. As they’re almost defeated and all of their systems are critical, Bruce makes an entrance. It looks like a bomb but it’s a nuclear bomb mixed with a big Bruce Banner Hulk bomb. Let’s go! What a moment.

Standout Character

Sam would be the obvious choice here. If I’m being 100% honest, none of the characters truly stood out in this episode.

Verdict

Godzilla meets Power Rangers in this episode but maybe not in the best way. There were some very entertaining scenes in this episode but ultimately it fell short compared to what we usually expect with these episodes. I never expected all of the what-if stories to hit the mark but this one didn’t.
