Thor is the only character within the MCU that has received a monumental 4 movies. We’ve had Thor (2011), The Dark World (2013), Ragnarok (2017), and Love & Thunder (2022).
There are mixed opinions on all of the Thor films, but truthfully, the only one I truly loved was Ragnarok. It’s a strange one because although Thor is 1-3 when it comes to films for me, I still adore the character. He’s had some of the best moments in the MCU. His entrance in Infinity War is still God-tier.
I believe Thor, in his standalone films, hasn’t been done well. We’ve seen character development, sure, but where we ended up in the end is a joke. Love & Thunder is a complete disaster, maybe even the worst MCU film, completely, and I genuinely mean that.
The 4th film was meant to be the aftermath of Endgame. It was supposed to be him getting his head straight after his adventures with the Guardians. Instead, we got an utter joke. A character that went from the most powerful Avenger to a comedy relief character, I don’t think I laughed once during Love & Thunder because it was embarrassing for the most part.
This is why Thor needs a 5th. I think Chris Hemsorth needs the 5th. Hemsworth feels born to play the role, and he deserves to have an incredible set of films. I’d honestly be happy if they binned off Love & Thunder and pretended like it never happened. I hope the Russo brothers can redeem him in Doomsday, but we’ll see.
I’m not entirely sure how Thor can be done so well in Ragnarok and all 4 of the Avengers movies, but go down the route he did. I don’t mind the comedic relief in any film. I like to laugh. Ragnarok had the right balance for it; it felt more arrogance and cockiness from him. How they managed to push the God of Thunder, who almost killed Thanos in Infinity War and did so in Endgame, be so berated and pushed down the way he was.
I mean, he’s about 1,500 years old for crying out loud. This is a man who’s been raised by Odin for over 1,400 years (minimum). I don’t see how, within just a few years, we go from that to this. He was still hyper serious in Dark World and also in Age of Ultron, so it baffles me from a logical standpoint.
We need someone to come in who actually cares about Thor. Who cares about making a good project? Who cares about the universe in general to fix what went wrong? I don’t think we’re so far gone that it can’t be fixed. It’s why I even said it, walking out of the theatres for Love & Thunder, that we desperately need a fifth for redemption above all else.
What do you think? Do you think Thor deserves a 5th movie within the MCU? Let us know down in the comments below.
