Once again, the end is near for Daredevil. The series starring Charlie Cox as the titular character will be ending the series with the upcoming third season.
Season 3 has already been shot and is currently deep into post-production, so we’re still getting that season, which is due to release in 2027. There just will not be a current Season 4 under the current Marvel plan.
Marvel had parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, whose contract expired and wasn’t renewed. That’s particularly surprising because he’s leaving while season 3 is still being finished. It is unclear who will oversee the remaining post-production work.
Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum had previously talked about wanting Born Again to operate as an annually returning television series, so ending it after Season 3 is a fairly substantial change of direction. There is one obvious warning sign: viewership had reportedly fallen heavily between the first and second seasons.
Reportedly, Season 1 had around 8.4 million views across its first five weeks, compared with approximately 4.5 million for Season 2, roughly a 47% decline. Although this does not prove it was the sole reason for the decision, it does give Marvel a financial reason to reconsider continuing the series.
One of the biggest disappointments with Born Again was that it rarely connected to the larger MCU. Some major events happened within Born Again, like Kingpin becoming Mayor and launching a crusade against vigilantes; the same goes for the Spider-Man movie; there was no mention of this either. Spider-Man was in the exact same city as Kingpin, with no mention at all.
