Is Marvel’s Avengers Worth Playing 2 Years On?

Very recently, me and Phil Weaver decided to load the game back up for the first time in a while.

The last we played the game was shortly after the Black Panther War for Wakanda DLC came out. Since then, we’ve had releases for both Spider-Man and Lady Thor.

I’m going to start with the game’s positives since the last time we played. Every character has a movie/series skin that you can use with the exception of Lady Thor which is surprising considering Thor has his Love and Thunder skin.

Some of the characters have all of their suits from the movies, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man all have their suits from the film they have been in within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s a nice touch for the game, especially the Iron Man suits because the original ones were absolutely dreadful.

My only gripe is they’re very expensive. Usually, each skin costs 1,400 credits. These can be obtained through the grueling challenge cards but if you wish to skip that and buy them then this is the pricing. 2,000 credits are £15.99 for those in the UK. This leaves you 600 credits, so you could purchase another 1,000 which is £7.99. To put that into perspective, you can buy one skin for £15.99 or two for £23.98. This only gives you 2 movie skins of your choice.

I understand the game has struggled but this pricing range really put people off. They would be better off putting deals out that include multiple skins. I.e, the original 5 Avengers, a movie skin each for £15-£20.

The next positive part of the game is the mission chains. There’s a fair amount to do. Granted, the game will always feel repetitive but it’s the nature of the game. The mission chains involve a lot of resources which is a plus.

Lady Thor was a nice addition to the game. She does play very similar to Thor which I think is a given, however, her abilities are an upgrade on Thor’s. I did enjoy my time using her.

That’s honestly really about it. So, before we get into the negatives, I’ll answer the question in the title. Is it worth playing?

Absolutely not.

I’m going to start with Spider-Man.

HOW DID THEY GET THIS SO WRONG?!

The PS1 Spider-Man games played better. I mean that honestly as well. I understand implementing Spider-Man into the game would have been difficult but Christ man, really?

I completed his mission chain and I couldn’t wait to stop using him. His movement is wonky and his swinging is a waste of time (you’d be better to just run everywhere). I love how Spider-Man can swing off nothing.

His abilities are disgustingly bad, his webbing is atrocious. I cannot express for the life of me just how bad Spider-Man is in the game. I’m not surprised the character didn’t come with a story like Kate and Black Panther did. They should be ashamed of themselves for even releasing this in the first place. Leave Spider-Man to Insomniac. This was a butchering.

The design was beautifully done.

Then the upgrade system. They have systematically made this system worse with each “upgrade” to it. Now, you can’t even upgrade gear until it reaches a certain level and you can only merge it with a higher level piece of gear. It basically renders a lot of the resources you get within the game useless. It also slows down progress massively.

All of the new content and missions they have added basically all require your character to be at a very high level. Due to the downgraded upgrade system, it requires a lot more unnecessary grinding to get a character up there. It can take a good couple of days depending on your schedule to get a character up there.

We also still have the same villain sectors too. These were repetitive at the start, they’re the same. They have added a couple with the DLC but the game has been out for 2 years, surely they can find ways to make this an improvement and not fight a 15-foot Taskmaster every day.

All in all, the game is not great. I believed when they said they’d continue supporting the game after a very poor launch that after 2 years we’d have a polished product. We don’t. It’s still a mess, it’s still buggy, and it feels like the executives and devs are trying to claw back as much money as they possibly can before calling it a day.

Steam Charts – PC playerbase only

The above image shows the live player count on Steam only. This doesn’t include numbers from console, but an average of 434.3 players per day on Steam is extremely bad. This is the Avengers. This game represents one of the biggest franchises on the planet. I’m not an expert in predicting numbers but I know for a fact this game won’t recover now.

Square Enix has shown they can publish a good game. Guardians of the Galaxy was very entertaining, it was fun, and the story was well-written. Yes, the game’s replayability is weak but so what? The game was quality.

Games need to realize that these types of games are very difficult to stick. It began with Destiny. Many games have tried. Anthem flopped, this has flopped, The Division is the closest thing to making it work.

I’ve written many times about Marvel’s Avengers in the past. I’ve scrutinized it at every single turn, so this will be the last time Comic Universe ever writes about the game. It’s time to let the game die and move on.
