It feels like forever since we have had a LEGO Star Wars game, and recently it feels like this game is so close yet so far away.
It was recently pushed back, and Google does still show the game is posed for a 2021 release, but I’m not expecting this to at least mid-2022.
Out of all the fantastic things they’ve showcased and added to the game, the one lingering question still remains.
What are the current plans with the co-op side?
We haven’t actually seen online co-op since the Complete Saga back in 2007, and despite all the LEGO Star Wars games since then, none have included an online co-op, just the conventional couch co-op.
Honestly, this was fine back then and from all the releases since. But theoretically, how many people still play couch co-op today compared to the early 2010s?
It isn’t a lot. Most of the people that played the original LEGO Star Wars games were young, and we’re adults now. Whilst I know it’s still technically a kids game, but adults can have fun with these games too.
For me, personally, the online co-op needs to be in this game. Most people who play games with friends are now remote. I can’t even remember the last time I had the chance to play a game in the same room as someone else. It was probably FIFA 6 years ago at a party.
The LEGO Star Wars games are fantastic, and the Skywalker Saga is setting itself up to be the biggest one yet, and I don’t doubt it will be, but it’s time the LEGO games get up to speed with the current times in gaming, and that is online.
It doesn’t mean online co-op should be the only method, couch co-op and solo play obviously can still be a thing. Shareplay via a PlayStation also just isn’t viable.
Also, another thing to note, because it’s been so long since I’ve played a game that’s split-screen, I couldn’t imagine the pure frustration of having to play with just half of a screen today. It would be awful.
Once the game has a release date, and IF this news is announced then you can bet I’ll be preordering at first chance.
I play a lot of online games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, FIFA, etc with my friends, and this is one of those games where I can chill out with a friend instead of playing competitively.
