RoboCop Deserves More

The 1987 movie is a masterpiece. There is no doubt about that. However, that’s all he really has although the reputation for the character far outweighs what he’s got when it comes to being used.

We got the 2014 reboot which was underrated. It had some great stuff in there including Murphy solving his own murder and also the focus on his family. However, it was underwhelming at the box office with an overwhelming dislike towards it from fans.

Despite those 2, we’ve only had 2 other films. RoboCop 2 and 3 with some television spots. Truthfully though, it’s all an absolute mess and it still is.

Everything seems to ignore the sequels we’ve already had. The latest news surrounding the character is that RoboCop 2 will be the next film, which will replace the already-released RoboCop 2 rendering that sequel non-cannon (effectively useless). It’s difficult to address this. I’ll explain further.

RoboCop was released in 1987. 35 years ago.

It’s all well and good doing a sequel from a few years back but going from a movie that came out 35 years ago makes no sense. The cast is much older now, including Peter Weller who is now 75 years old.

Personally, I think another reboot should happen. The issue is, 1987 is perfect. The problem is again that was so many years ago.

Now you may be asking, what could they do to make a reboot successful? It’s simple enough. They could follow the original formula for the ’87 movie, make it r-rated, and assign a director to the project who cares about the lore and the character. We then have a fresh foundation to make a brand new trilogy with each movie actually being good. It’ll be made even better with the current technology we have in movies, especially CGI and VFX.

The problem with the reboot was that it tried too much and the PG-13 aspect of the film did really hurt it. This one wouldn’t need to do that.

This is a character that has a huge fan base and following. For some reason Orion Pictures allow the character to rust away yet they’re sitting on an absolute goldmine.

RoboCop: Rogue City is the first game for the character on a AAA release. He’s shown up in Mortal Kombat 11 but that’s it. Again, he deserves more and so far, the game and the footage we’ve seen look pretty underwhelming although I’ll reserve judgment until I actually play it. The graphics look appalling.

It again falters into what they could do with RoboCop. The 1987 movie released, was brilliant and it’ll live on for years to come. I’m not usually in the realm of wanting reboots to happen, especially for already good films. I just love the character so much that I want NEW movies and possibly TV series for him.

RoboCop is still one of the most intriguing characters ever. All he needs is a decent enough direction and we’re away with it. They still shouldn’t be canceling out the sequels we’ve already had and just rebooting the entire thing.

They tried it, but it failed. It doesn’t need to be the end of that. They can try again. Fantastic Four is a prime example. The originals were okay, the reboot was a disaster, now Disney will take another stab at it, this time ensuring proper care and love to it, I have no doubt it’ll be even better.
