Spider-Man: Brand New Day needed just 47 days to take a box-office record that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had held for more than 10 years.
Spider-Man has finally dethroned Star Wars. The Force Awakens had held the domestic record for more than a decade with $936.66 million. The fact that Brand New Day is the film that finally knocked it off the throne shows just how enormous Spider-Man remains as a cinematic character.
It did not just break the record; it absolutely demolished records on the way. Brand New Day opened to around $360 million domestically, beating Avengers: Endgame for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever. It then became the fastest film to reach $400M, $500M, $600M, $700M, $800M, and $900M domestically. That’s an absurd run at the box office.
No Way Home already proved Holland’s Spider-Man could generate event-level excitement, but Brand New Day has gone beyond that. Holland has become the face of modern superhero cinema. His fourth solo Spider-Man film has achieved something even the Avengers could not.
Fans were worried about the movie being a more grounded, street-level movie. After the multiverse spectacle and the nostalgia of No Way Home. Instead of relying on Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield again, Brand New Day proved that audiences were still massively invested in Peter himself.
Iron Man helped build the MCU, Avengers became a global phenomenon, but Spider-Man’s longevity is ridiculous. Brand New Day has now beaten Endgame’s $858.4M domestic total and No Way Home’s $814.8M.
It’s already beyond $936M, so the next almost insane milestone is $1 billion domestically. That is still a sizeable climb this late into its theatrical run, but the fact that this isn’t even out of the question simply because of the film’s performance is actually incredible.
