Supergirl “Nightmare in National City” Review

Season 6 Episode 16 – Kara lands her dream story for Catco, but when the city is suddenly attacked by a nightmare monster at the same time as her interview, she is forced to take a serious look at her life and decide if she can continue to live as both Kara and Supergirl.

What I Liked

1. For the first time Andrea is on my likes. After she sets up a meeting for Kara, she misses it due to The Simpson’s dome. Andrea calls her and puts her on blast for it. Despite her admitting that Kara’s journalism work is flawless, she does give Kara a lot of leeways and she’s absolutely right. I completely understand, and my like is further fuelled by Melissa’s acting. The way she acted during that call showed genuine fear from trying to maintain her personal life whilst trying to save the city.

2. Kara quits Catco, which we kind of knew was coming anyway but it was a pretty decent quitting story. With how involved Supergirl is in everything, I can only imagine how difficult it would be to maintain a personal life whilst being that kind of superhero. It was a touching scene that kind of releases a burden on Kara’s shoulders.

What I Disliked

1. I’m sorry but Nyxyl is just NOT a compelling villain at all. It rings further true at the beginning of the episode where the AI from the Luthor suit has her voice and is acting like “her” despite us knowing it’s Lex, even though her getting one of those suits adds nothing to the story in any way. She doesn’t feel like a threat, doesn’t act like a threat, and is just a very poor choice for a villain, especially for the final ever season of Supergirl.

2. This is actually pathetic. The SAME scene AGAIN!!! It’s pissing me off. Nyxyl gets to a totem, Supergirl and friends show up, get outplayed in 30 seconds and Nyxyl disappears. This exact situation has happened on SEVERAL occasions now. This show is literally unbearable to watch. Oh, and to further fuel the inability to enjoy this show, a “nightmare monster” shows up. Take that one as you will.

3. The “Super Friends” erected a dome over National City. You know, the same dome you see in The Simpsons Movie? Yeah, that. They popped that up to protect the nightmare thing from reaching and destroying a nuclear power plant. Why don’t they just put the dome over the nuclear plant instead of trapping citizens?

4. I love Lex, I’m glad he’s back, but the way he is back is trash. Simple as that. It was beyond predictable the moment the suit showed up in the last episode. It’s better when he’s the actual villain, and not just sidelining for Nyxyl.

Favourite Moment

A great moment for Nia as well, finally. After they reach the dream totem, Nia learns her sister is actually trying to steal the dream powers and has been studying to do so for years. Nia finally stands up for herself to her sister and puts her on blast. The acting here was subliminal. Nyxyl shows up to break things up and she and Nia end up in a fight. Surprisingly, Nia got the upper hand in the fight which is a change before Nyxyl (being the worst villain in history) runs away as per usual.

Standout Character

This is a very difficult one to choose considering how poor the episode was in its entirety, but of course, we do have to choose. Nia will take it, she stood out more above the rest this week. More so in standing up to her sister eventually and owning her abilities and title as Dreamer.

Verdict

A very poor episode that continues to showcase by Nxyly is one of the worst villains to ever exist in a superhero show. This week also showcases just how far Supergirl has fallen compared to the first episode. This did, however, get slightly better towards the end but for the most part, it was unbearable.
