What I Liked
1. Ryan returns to the episode. A squadron of Russian military personnel heads into a large house with weapons at the ready. They’re picked off one by one in the shadows, brutally, as well may I add. You don’t realise until the final person is killed that it’s Ryan. A great opening sequence.
2. Soldier Boy is inducted into The Seven again. The conversation between Homelander and Soldier Boy is hilarious. Soldier Boy just stares on as Homelander tries to reason with him regarding the virus and the mission. We do learn after this that Soldier Boy has the very first compound V inside of him. This is how he survived the virus; it’s also why he doesn’t age. Dr. Shah effectively explains that the virus cannot kill Soldier Boy.
3. Hughie’s reaction to Translucent’s son is fantastic. He is shocked that Translucent has a kid, but has been lied to. He’s been told it was Homelander that killed his father, not Hughie. I love it when the show does throwbacks. It feels like a long time since we saw Hughie vs Translucent. As the episode progresses, Maverick tries to stop Deep and co from entering the facility, only for Deep to tell him the truth about who killed his dad.
4. Madelyn returns in angelic form to Homelander as he begins to freak out over being told he’s a disappointment by basically everyone at this point. She explains to Homelander that he could become a God, and that no one is loved more than Jesus. She also effectively tells him to kill so many people, and whoever is left will be believers. It’s a terrifying thought that Homelander can be manipulated at times.
5. Butcher and Ryan come face to face for the first time in a while. Butcher casually drops the bomb that Homelander and Rebecca weren’t exactly consensual. Butcher is using Ryan to try to pull Homelander out of the tower in order to hit him with the virus before he gets access to V1. Ryan has aged brilliantly as well; he now actually feels like a threat.
6. Zoe sneaks out into the van that Kimiko and Frenchie are using. They head back to their facility, which allows Zoe to reunite with her father, Dr. Shah. As a result of finding out the truth, the pair decides to smash up all of their own on the virus. Frenchie tries to intervene, but Kimiko stops him. I completely understood why they did what they did here, and why Kimiko stops Frenchie.
7. After the lab was destroyed, Butcher requests that Ryan stand down. Ryan gets angry due to the lies Butcher holds him, that he’s got the ability to take Homelander down. Ryan walks out, and it’s clear exactly where he’s going…
8. Black Noir manages to nab Stan Edgar and takes him back to the Cybertruck, where Deep is waiting. Deep is clever here. He throws a smoke bomb in the truck, which knocks out Stan and Black Noir. He then throws Black Noir out of the truck and drives away, seemingly to take all of their credit. He’s stupid at times, but that’s a smart play.
9. Maverick vs Hughie now. Of course. Hughie gets beaten quite badly, and Maverick has the upper hand. Cindy walks in and kills Maverick instantly. Starlight walks in and believes it to be Hughie she killed, before then snapping Cindy’s neck. What a brilliant action sequence. I’m a bit sad to see Cindy get nerfed into the ground, but the scene was still great.
What I Disliked
Nothing to report this week.
Favorite Moment
Ryan vs Homelander. It’s quite hard to take the fight seriously with Homelander’s reactions. Antony Starr is honestly just perfect. Things do get serious, though, when Ryan lands a perfectly placed shot. Homelander drops him down and slowly begins to punch him close to death. The lack of music and slow, methodical punches made this scene eerily uncomfortable. I’m actually grateful he survived it. That was brutal.
Standout Character
Homelander. He is more unstable than ever. He’s arrogant, knowing that once he gets the first-ever version of Compound V, he will be immortal. He is already going on as if that’s happened. Homelander has always felt unpredictable and intense; it’s more so than ever now, proven in the scene where he barely hesitated in his attack on Ryan.
Verdict
3 10/10 episodes in a row. This season keeps getting better and better. The episode had so much to deliver. The story was perfect. The action was perfect. It’s difficult to give much more praise than this. I hope the rest of the season continues to deliver as it’s becoming one of the things I’m beyond excited for each week.
