What the New Harry Potter HBO Series Can Finally Bring to the Screen

If you have been living under a rock for the past year or so, you would have known that Harry Potter is being remade into an HBO live-action series that will adapt all seven of the original books with one book per season. The series will be a “decade-long” project, which means production and release will stretch over many years.

The official creative leadership, Francesca Gardiner, is the showrunner for the series and lead writer, while Mark Mylod is a director/executive producer on the series. Filming for the first season has already begun in summer 2025 and will consist of eight episodes, with many sources leaning towards a 2027 release.

The movies often streamlined some rich internal conflicts and emotional journeys. The series can explore Harry’s trauma and anger, especially within Order of the Phoenix, Hermione’s activism for house-elves, Ron’s insecurities, as they were often turned into comic relief in the movies, Neville’s family backstory, including more about his parents’ tragedy, and Ginny’s personality, which in the books was more vibrant and confident.

Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

The TV series can finally adapt entire book subplots that were cut or minimized in the movies, things like Peeves the Poltergeist, a major figure who was missing entirely from the films. A richer explanation of James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter at Hogwarts. The series can even dive into the Gaunt Family and Voldemort’s psychology, as well as the Hogwarts Ghosts themselves, and more magical creatures and class scenes. These worldbuilding elements deepen the universe and were a key aspect of the books’ charm.

Because of how HBO can dedicate multiple episodes to each book, the series has room to fully develop long-form arcs. Some of these arcs can be the slow, mysterious reveal of the Horcruxes, spreading hints across seasons instead of cramming them into later installments. The political rise of Voldemort, Fudge’s denial, and the Ministry’s propaganda. Dumbledore’s complex motivations and flaws, something which the films streamlined.

Two things I would love the series to dive more into would be Harry and Draco’s rivalry, which can be explored with more nuance, and the full tension of the Hogwarts Siege, including earlier hints and smaller battles that the films rushed. The series can focus on suspense, detailed foreshadowing, and deeper payoffs that require long-form storytelling.

Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. As of late 2025, the writing for season 2 has already begun, and the production pace aims to keep momentum beyond the first book. The show’s creators also publicly stated that the goal of making the adaptation “faithful” to the books, preserving as much depth and detail as possible.
