Why I Disliked The Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Movies – Unpopular Opinions #3

*We regularly have conversations that differ from the mass public opinion. Everyone has an opinion that many others don’t agree with. Please do note, this is just our opinion. We are NOT stating facts or anything. We ask you to respect this when commenting.*

It’s June 14th, 2002, Tobey Maguire dons the famous Spider-Man suit, and it’s great. It’s amazing. We finally get a live-action Spider-Man swinging through New York.

I was 8, almost 9 then so, of course, I was absolutely glued to the screen when it came to DVD or video back then.

However, the more I got older, the more my thoughts on the 3 set movies completely changed. It wasn’t due to the technology getting better, I just realized I absolutely did not like them.

My first reason is Mary-Jane. What an absolute nightmare of a character throughout the entire trilogy. I can barely recall a time where I actually liked her. I felt like all she did was whine, never happy, and completely different from the version we see in the Spider-Man PS4 game – where Peter had been Spider-Man for so many years, and she’s still happy to help.

She even gets with his best friend. Come on, really? Talk about stabbing someone right in the back. When I tried to watch the first movie a few months ago, I switched it off around an hour into it because of her.

Plus, Tobey never really fit the bill for the Spider-Man counterpart, not in comparison to Andrew, or Tom. However, more importantly, he did have the Peter Parker look, and style nailed down. I always say he was a solid Peter, but just not that great of a Spider-Man.

Whilst the villain catalog was great. Doc Oc, Green Goblin, Sandman, Venom, we had a fair share of solid villains, but where’re the suits? Honestly, where? We only got the original, and the symbiote variants.

One of the things that are great with Spider-Man, is his wardrobe of some stunning suits. Tom Holland has already brought a couple of these to life. The stealth and Iron Spider suits were brought in. They were amazing. This isn’t something that bothered me then, but playing the games and reading the comics with the mass amount of suits, it started to.

Let’s not discuss the absolute disaster of Spider-Man 3. We will just not go down that road. That’s a story for another day.

It’s crazy the memes that float around social media also make you think of the trilogy in a different way. Especially the one where he’s crying or doing that horrible, awful dance. I can’t enjoy these movies anymore.

The issue comes as well when I actually enjoy the Andrew Garfield movies (that’s an Unpopular Opinion article for another day), and I feel like Tom has just nailed the role, and will comfortably be Spider-Man for many more years to come.

The trilogy did have high points, and for what they were at a time where the MCU didn’t exist, then fair enough. Compare them to some of the powerhouses since they just don’t live up to the bill.

I can’t fathom how people prefer Tobey over Tom, especially when Stan Lee literally said, Tom was how he envisioned Spider-Man to look, and act.

I understand nostalgia sets in, but for me, personally, I just don’t like them. I appreciate them for the place it set, especially for Marvel, but I can’t enjoy them the way I could when I was 8.

Who is your favorite Spider-Man live-action? Tobey, Andrew, or Tom? Let us know down in the comments who and why.
