Why I’m Kind of Glad Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Only a Theatrical Release

Due to COVID, cinemas around the world have closed, resulting in a magnitude of delays for movies to be released in a theatrical release, in order to protect their investment and projects profits. I always understood it.

Despite Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney for releasing her movie on Disney+ Premier Access, I got that too.

Disney went through the entirety of 2020 without a movie, the first year without a movie since, well, I can’t even remember.

However, releasing Black Widow on Disney+ for £19.99 meant I just stayed at home and watched it, which for me as a person, I always go to the cinema to watch these types of movies, because they’re my favorite kinds and I love the cinema.

I tried to buy popcorn, bought a Tango Ice Blast, and the usual stuff I do when I go to the Movies, but it still felt different. I never got that big screen experience, and it honestly kind of sucked.

The pandemic has made me lazier, and granted I could have just went to the cinema but at the time in the UK, I didn’t want to wear a mask throughout the entire movie. I could be totally wrong, but I believed those were the rules at the time. I still wear a mask now, but I can’t do it for a prolonged period of time.

There are 2 reasons why I’m glad it’s only coming to the cinema and a reason why I’m not.

Here are the reasons why I am;

1. It forces me to go out. COVID has made me lazy I’m not going to lie, and I’m finding ways to improve that recently. Going out for a meal and to the cinema with my wife would be an amazing date night, and we’d have an excuse to do so.

2. For the movie’s profits. According to Box Office Mojo, Black Widow only received $345,358,535. Still an impressive feat after COVID, but I do believe the movie would have earned a lot more if it wasn’t for COVID and cinema only.

Now the reason why I’m not glad is that it allows those incapable of going to the cinema. For example those with health issues, those who are self-isolating, among others that can watch the movie day 1 in the comfort of their own home, whilst feeling safe.

I feel like since HBO Max moving in this direction with the day 1 release, it kind of forces piracy a bit much as well when ideally it shouldn’t.
