Batwoman “How Does Your Garden Grow?” Review

Season 3 Episode 6 – An unnerving discovery in a garden shed sends Renee Montoya rushing to Ryan to ensure the city is on high alert; Alice is suspiciously eager to help the bat team and Sophie seeks vengeance for an incident involving her sister.

What I Liked

1. I’m just going to take a moment to appreciate Renee Montoya, she has been a great addition to the show. I love her attitude and more so how she actively supports the team such as recommending Police to take an injured person to Mary. Not the hospital, directly to Mary.

2. I love that they haven’t dragged out the storyline of Mary being infected by Poison Ivy. Even if it did take a couple of episodes for the team to even notice something was up with her. However it’s quite an interesting take on this, I didn’t expect them to go down the route of her actually harming people. Very interesting take on the character.

3. Sophie’s scene while interrogating Virgil was short-lived but brutal non the less. I feel like we need to see more of the “crow” side of Sophie this season. She was pretty badass last season and I’ve felt that slipping away from her these past few episodes. So I do hope they can bring that back for her.

What I Disliked

I don’t mind Alice being “imperfect” if you will, I love the sarcastic comments and the bad attitude. What I don’t appreciate is the moments where she takes away her redemption. A few episodes ago she left a little girl to die, and in this episode, she let “Poison Ivy” loose to kill an innocent person. There are only so many times she can be forgiven for this sort of stuff.

Favourite Moment

Seeing Mary go full-blown “Poison Ivy” was such a fun spin on the character. Mary so far has been pushed to the side massively by the rest of the team, and now she’s become one of their biggest threats yet. Not only because she’s Poison Ivy, but because she is Mary. She knows everything there is to know about how the team operates, every move they will make. Even though she’s gone Evil, I actually love to see Mary taking a bit of spotlight for once!

Standout Character

Mary/Poison Ivy is hands down taking standout this week. Completely different from what Nicole Kang has done for the past few seasons and yet she’s pulled it off effortlessly.

Verdict

A great episode this week, an amazing spin on Mary’s character which even though unexpected has made for a very interesting storyline for her, which I do feel she deserves as the team has pushed her to the side a lot quite recently. I look forward to seeing what Poison Ivy is going to be bringing to our screens.
