Supergirl “Event Horizon” Review

Season 5 Episode 1 “Kara is surprised to find CatCo has a new owner who has brought in a star reporter; new couples emerge and explore their budding relationships; J’onn J’onzz receives an unexpected visitor.”

What Was Good?

1. The episode starts off with Supergirl saving some children from a runaway school bus. Lena see’s Supergirl make the save then punches her into the bus engine causing an explosion. When i saw this in the trailer i didn’t know what to think or expect but luckily this was a simulation Lena has been creating along with other simulations about what she can do to cause Kara pain or hurt from the betrayal last season.

The strain on Kara and Lena’s friendship is weird to see because of how close they’ve been in the past both. Lena is obviously heartbroken because of the way she found of Kara and Supergirl is the same person.

2. There is a new company that is in National City and that company is Obsideon and is run by a woman named Andrea Rojas. The name “Obsideon” was mentioned countless times throughout this episode.. Could this be the potential villain/villain company of the season?

3. In this episode Supergirl fights an unexpected villain…a T Rex which causes her cape to be ripped and is causing Supergirl trouble throughout the episode so this annoys Brainy who sets out to design and create a new updated super suit. Brainy being the highly intelligent being he is designed a microscopic suit which he planted on Kara’s glasses so it’ll be easily when she rips off her glasses at the first sign of trouble which causes the suit to manifest onto her body. When i first saw set photos of this new suit and her look I have to be honest i wasn’t a fan but seeing it in action and manifesting onto her body changed my opinion.

4. The villain of the episode was not one of Supergirl’s villain but rather J’onnz villain, someone he once locked in the phantom zone. She attacks the super group before escaping to let her powers recharge. When Kara is at her award presentation Midnight attacks again this time causing a black hole. Which J’onn gets sucked into which leads Supergirl to jump in and do a solar flare and save J’onn and destroy the black hole.

What Was Bad?

1. A strange woman is in James office talking about changing how it looks.. this is no other than Andrea Rojas. She tells Kara and James that she’s bought Catco and will find James a new job around the office. Andrea announces some changes which not everyone agrees with. James speaks to his sister and hints at leaving the company.

At the end of the episode we see James quit Catco and gets threatened by Andrea with the “you won’t work in journalism again” cliche. This for me is sad because i like James on the show as himself and also Guardian, with James leaving the show has lost one of the funniest/best duo’s in James and Winn.

2. At the start of the show when Supergirl is fighting a T. Rex Martian Manhunter arrives to help but get’s psychic attacked by someone. This will be revealed later but depending on where this arch for J’onn leads to will be amazing to see.

Holy shit Moment

1. Kara has been trying everything to put off telling Lena she’s Supergirl but finally snaps at her presentation when Lena shows up for support or to reveal Kara’s secret to the world. This scene between the two was so powerful and emotional that I didn’t know who was in the wrong Kara for not telling her sooner or Lena for wanting to take revenge and tell the world about Kara’s alter ego.

2. J’onn’s attacked is finally revealed when a little girl who appeared a few times this episode walks into his office and takes his true form. This mystery person is revealed to be a green Martian.. not just any green Martian but Ma’alefa’ak, For those who don’t know this is J’onnz evil brother. They go to attack each other mentally but J’onn passes out from the attack.

The Verdict

Not the strongest episode in terms of villains but from a story arc standpoint was really strong. This episode had reveals and announcements which can lead into one of the best Supergirl seasons. We finally got Kara telling Lena she’s Supergirl. J’onn mystery attacker revealed to be his brother Ma’alefa’ak.
