Marvel’s “Echo” Season Review

Brief Overview

Echo continues the story for Maya from the events of the Hawkeye series and sees Maya return home to reconnect with her family and community while the fallout of her shooting Kingpin follows her back home.

Echo continues to expand the mythos of the Choctaw people along with building Maya’s story up for her to continue to develop as a character. The Echo series really showcases just how powerful sign language can be and how loud someone can actually be even without speaking.

Story – 7.5/10

I went into this series not knowing what or how the story would progress from the events of the Hawkeye series. Last we saw, Maya had shot Kingpin through the eye and we didn’t know where this would lead within her own series.

The story saw Maya return to her home in Oklahoma, away from New York City, and the crimes she committed in that city. With the series being only five episodes, the story dived straight in. Being pursued by Fisk’s organization, we get to see Maya reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace her family and community.

Honestly, the story was kind of stale and boring in parts. It just fell flat at certain points in each episode. It’s hard to connect to a story when it is plain, nothing truly stood out with the story in present-day in the series, where it did shine was the highlighted periods of time where it showcased the Choctaws in different periods, including the 13th and 18th centuries.

Action – 7/10

The action was truly hit or miss. In the opening episode, we get to see the return of Daredevil, who gets into a fight with Maya. This scene should have been great but it wasn’t. It was anything but great. You could see the stunt double, you could see them pretending to hit each other. It was a mess, you could literally see them do the choreography to the fight. Disappointing.

In other episodes the action was great. Maya, being an amputee absolutely destroyed many people in her way. Every other bit of action was great too, especially in the final episode when her family came to help. I just wish they took more care of the action within the series.

Characters – 8/10

The characters were surprisingly decent. They introduced us to many of Maya’s family and showcased more of her ancestors. They also brought Kingpin back, although I do have my issues with characters which I’ll explain.

firstly, Daredevil. I was so excited to see the return of Matt within the series. They brought him back for one flashback fight scene which was mediocre at best. Secondly, Fisk. While I love Vincent’s performance within this series, the ending, more, in turn, the “encounter” with Maya was somewhat of a letdown. I expected at least a few punches to be thrown but no, they immediately made Maya use her powers on him and that was it.

Entertainment – 6/10

I can not sit here and say I was thoroughly entertained. I wasn’t. Within certain scenes in different episodes, I was, for example, in the train scene. I was hooked. The rest of the time I wasn’t invested or entertained. I had high hopes for the series which was a slight letdown.

Episodes – 7/10

While they cut down the episodes to a two-hour event it wasn’t enough to let me connect with the character of Maya even more than her series should have. I feel like 5 episodes were just one or two episodes short.

Antagonist – 9/10

I loved Fisk in this, albeit the ending. In the flashbacks, he was dominant, powerful, and ruthless. In present-day, he was that and more. We saw a side of Fisk we only truly saw in the Netflix show with Vanessa. The finale showed how easily that side can be switched when he threatened to kill Maya’s entire family just like her father.

Quality – 6/10

The quality of this show was a letdown. There are 3 main things that let the quality down which I’ll speak about in this section. Firstly, The fight scenes. There were more than a few times when I would notice the body double for Maya. You could notice the body shape change, the build, the legs, the movement of her limbs.

Secondly, the background in the shots. More than a few times I would be getting invested in a scene and boom, you could tell the background was a green screen or just shot weirdly. For example, the scene where Fisk appears at Maya’s home. It felt like they had placed him in digitally.

Thirdly, in the train scene. While I know they couldn’t shoot in a practical environment. They could have at least checked the truck that was chasing after the train. I noticed how it was shot instantly. It looked like it was from a modern-day cutscene in a video game.

Favorite Episode

My favorite episode was definitely the fifth episode titled “Maya”. I loved how her family came together to help Maya. I loved seeing her get her new suit which had ties back to her ancestors. What I loved more than anything about the episode was simply the culture and the event of the Native Americans. The dancing, the music it was all great.

Worst Episode

The first episode was the worst episode for me personally. While I know people will like this episode and this episode does help new people. I disliked it. It was a 30-minute recap of everything that happened and added together with some new scenes. a five-minute montage could have done the job just as easily.

Our Overall Rating 7.2/10

Does It Deserve Another Season?

I feel like it does deserve another season. I feel like there are still plenty of stories left regarding Maya. I just feel like the first season didn’t truly clarify what’s next for her. Would I be mad if we didn’t get another season? No.
