Superman & Lois Season 2 Review

Overview

I will admit. After season 1 finished, I had next to zero hope that season 2 will continue on from what was a masterpiece of a season. It’s The CW after all, they’re notorious for taking good shows, filling them with pointless dramas, and turning them into a soap opera.

Thank the Lord that never happened. Season 2 took a step up in almost every single way albeit the antagonist which we’ll get into shortly.

Whilst the series did take a step up, there were a few annoyances but this mainly falls into the character side with the exception of one; Superman & Lois is NOT part of the Arrowverse, confirmed in the finale which is ridiculous. I did write about that in further detail which you can read here.

Despite those grievances, the season did a lot of things right, especially the story. Just like the first season, the second season was more interesting as it focused on the Bizarro world. In other live-action iterations we’ve had different versions of Bizarro but nothing that was as full-scale as this.

The attention to detail in the quality was astounding. I mean it has to be considering everything is reversed but when you look at the world itself compared to the one we watch is remarkable. This shows even further in the final episode when the Kent farm drops in and out.

One of the things I will give props to is the writer’s decision not to write out Superman for too long. In the third to last episode, he lost his powers and essentially became human. This is a common storyline as The Flash has lost his powers more times than I can care to admit now, but they only wrote this in for an entire episode, including the end of him losing his powers and also half of the finale.

I mean, when you think of it like that, we truly have seen Superman in every angle this season. He was also in prison for a short while and helped the Mayor. This is what I love about the show though, they don’t tend to stick around on a section for too long – they know it’s boring after it goes on too long, this show doesn’t do that, and season 2 continued the trend.

It’s difficult not to like this show. Over the course of 2 seasons the show has seriously impressed not just me, but my family, my fellow writers, and even our fans on social media. I guess now in a sense to those that don’t want to show the show due to the Arrowverse ties, that doesn’t matter now. You can just jump on the first episode and you’ll be entirely up to date with the course.

I said this in my first review, I cannot recommend this show enough.

Characters

This is the meaty part of the review. I’d like to start with the annoying aspect of the characters. This season, Lana stood out. She was awful. I hate to say it but she truly did nothing for me this season. Kyle cheated on her way back when and she was right to walk away from that relationship, but after the breakup, she leads Kyle on again. The drama here felt like it was back to what Arrow was like with all the drama for no reason. She also took a massive huff when Cal told her his true identity. I hated every part of that.

Then there’s Sarah, she wasn’t as bad as Lana but she was still very poor this season. I’m not too fond of anything more than someone forcing another person to open up when they clearly cannot do so. Sarah did this to Jordan and only decided to want him back after Jordan had to give up his identity in order to protect Lana and Sarah against Bizarro Lana.

Lastly, on the dislikes, I wasn’t a big lover of Ally as an antagonist. She felt very meh. I loved the premise surrounding what she was actually doing in merging the worlds together, but her as an actual villain just didn’t do a whole lot for me as a viewer. It wasn’t until the very late episodes she actually made an impact when she took Superman’s powers away, and then attempted to merge the worlds – but besides that, she wasn’t as memorable as Tal is, or even Bizarro himself although after how that ended, I’m not particularly sure you can really call him a villain.

Now onto the better sides of characters. I want to start with a very underrated character in Kyle. Yes, he was involved more in the drama sides of things this season but his character brings out that humanity in the show if that makes sense. Even though he cheated, you feel for him. You can genuinely see how sorry he is, how he’s always there for his family and tries to do his best. I liked that, he was great this season.

Clark, Lois, John, and Natalie were all phenomenal this season. I don’t want to go into each character individually as there are so many good things to say about these 4 in particular. Every time they’re on screen, I’m focused, I’m entertained and I enjoy what they’re about. I do want to give Natalie a special shoutout, she thoroughly changed for the better as the season went on compared to the beginning.

Tal (Morgan Edge) was also just so damn entertaining every time he was on screen. I absolutely love the fact he turned into a hero (in his own way). Even after everything he did in the first season, you still completely love the character. That’s when you know a villain has been well done. I can’t say I’d care for much if Ally went on a redemption ark.

Then, the standout for me this season…

Standout Character

Jordan. The development he’s had this season is fantastic and very well done. I like the fact he isn’t just throwing a cape on and playing Superman, but he is learning episode by episode. We see him go from this very emotional kid to stopping his brother from being attacked, to learning how to fly, to it all being on him to protect his family when his Dad lost his powers. If I do have one want for next season for Jordan, it is a suit. I think he’s ready to don a cape with the Hope symbol. He’s proved he’s capable and looks damn great when he’s in a fight as well.

Favourite Episode

It has to be the finale. Just for the simple fact, we got the One Tease of Superman where he literally sits on the sun to recharge his powers after losing them. The way he returns is just epic. He’s quicker, stronger, and more determined than ever to take Ally down. Another perfect finale.

Worst Episode

It’s episode 12 for me. I came away from that episode disappointed for the first time. We’ve been reviewing the show since it started but I don’t think we’ve had an episode besides that one that really annoyed us. It was predictable and the drama surrounding the Cushing family did get a bit much for us.

Our Overall Rating 9/10

Our overall is just slightly below our average ratings but I think this is more a result of the antagonist. She did make an impact in terms of almost destroying the world in a way, she just wasn’t memorable. Her character didn’t do a lot and I think that let the rating down above all else. Granted, 9/10 is still amazing, giving both seasons an average of 9.5/10 when it comes to our season reviews.

Does It Deserve Another Season?

The show has already been given the go-ahead for season 3 and it absolutely deserves a third season in every regard. The show is outstanding, I can’t stress or write that enough. I really hope after all the recent cancelations from The CW that season 3 isn’t the last.

Availability

Superman and Lois is available on The CW network in the United States. Unfortunately outside of that, the show isn’t available to watch unless you take other means to do so. This is still a major problem for any of The CW shows.
